I'd like to pasturize some wheat straw. I know it has to be done in water that is 170f. The problem is that I have no way of knowing when the water is at the appropreate temprature. I would rather not go and buy a temprature guage. Is there any other way of knowing?? Oh, and where can I find wheat straw? I'f I just nabbed some hay from farmer bobs bails, would it work just as good. Thanks for any help. Its been a while since I have been in mushroom cultivation. This is fun:) I used to come here all the time when I just started. Anyway, I baked, sorry to waste time:)

I've heard you can take boiling water, and turn it off, let it sit for a minute. Then put the straw into the water, and let it soak until the water cools. Not sure of the accuracy of that, i just know i've heard of it, or read it somewhere. If you're too lazy/broke to buy a candy thermometer, i'm not sure how you go about doing it, other than that method. I would just do it,t hough if you can. They only cost about 4$ and you can buy them at almost any grocery store.

Anybody you know........ a good cook?
Borrow their meat or candy themometer.
$4 is not much to spend & a worth while investment, if you want to do pasturization in an accurate manner.

Ok, I'll buy a thermometer today, I thought there might have been a simpler method. Thx. Is there any way to identify wheat straw? Does it differ from hay in appearance??
