Well, I've decided to try my hand at electronic music for a change. I just made a very small snippet of music, as a start. And I guess I was hoping to hear some thoughts on it.
Here are my thoughts:
- sounds more like a hip-hop beat than electronic music
- chord progression might be too similar to other songs (thought it sounded familiar but couldn't place it)
- needs further development!
if you listen, thanks!
EDIT: attached song is newer version

I would recommend taking the edge off of the chord progression. Make it a little more "dreamy" you know?? I'll see if I can't figure something out with audacity.

Here is just a quick thing I did with audacity.
Downloaded your file, used the compressor, fad in, wah pedal, and phaser.
This is end result. I like dreamy electronic, feel free to hate on it though

haha cool.
I'd love to have more effects like that (although probably not on the whole thing!) but I'm using Cubase LE (light edition) which is limited.
i also need better instruments

Download audacity.
Its freeware. Whatever file you make, you can then upload into audacity and edit the shit out of it with cool effects

I think that's great for a first try! Even after trying multiple times, mine were could never be considered good in any sense of the word.
I liked it, even though it did have a hip hop feel. Personally, I'd say go with it; sound good regardless if you hit your target genre.

thanks man! i'll run with this one, see where it goes.
I'd love to make music in the style of Shulman, bluetech, etc... psybient stuff.
i'm getting fed up with the limitations of my software though.

thanks, i already have audacity though. i used it before I started using cubase.
if I wanted to, I could do the same thing with cubase... mixdown my MIDI information into wav files, then upload them back into cubase and add effects and automation. but there should be an easier way.

So I assume you have a keyboard then? That was the main reason why I never really tried too hard to make any music; I wasn't sure if I wanted to invest in a midi keyboard. I messed around with some software for a bit, but then realized I really needed a keyboard to play with.
Never did end up getting one

Yeah, having a keyboard is... key.
My friend gave me one for free. It's an old Yamaha, he just didn't use it at all and said he wanted it to go to use. Helped me out a whole bunch, I'm able to practice playing piano and also use it to record music with. Not the nicest keyboard by any means, but it's something.
I've added some to my little song, I'll update when it's a little more complete.

if you play boletusoftruth's song then have boxcar's song play right after that it sounds like they were meant to be one song.

Wow, I like the new and improved version much better!
Seems like it never really gets out of that intro feel though. If my musical theory vocabulary was up to par, I might be able to describe it better.

Thanks all you guys!
here is one last updates version for the day. I'm calling it quits for now and will work on it another time. It's really begging for a change-up, it's pretty much the same idea rehashed a bunch of times.
Anyway, here it is!

I'll definitely be looking for new stuff you post up. Sounds like you're really making some advances.
I had a class in college where we basically had to compose something similar to this (1min max). It would have been a badass class because of all the available equipment and whatnot, had I not been like the worst composer in the class... Sharing time was not fun

I appreciate the support brother! very much!
That does sound like a fun class. I'm a music major and I can't wait to start my composition classes. Right now I'm just in theory though.
