Democratic Senator Predicts None of His Colleagues 'Will Have the Chance' to Read Final Stimulus Bil

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) predicted on Thursday that none of his Senate colleagues would "have the chance" to read the entire final version of the $790-billion stimulus bill before the bill comes up for a final vote in Congress.
“No, I don’t think anyone will have the chance to [read the entire bill],” Lautenberg told CNSNews.com.
The final bill, crafted by a House-Senate conference committee, was posted on the Website of the House Appropriations Committe late Thurday in two PDF files.
The first PDF was 424 pages long and the second PDF was 575 pages long, making the total bill 999 pages long. The House is expected to vote on this 999-page bill Friday, and the Senate either later Friday or Saturday. [Editor's note: The first PDF, as posted on the House Appropriations Committee website as of 8:20 AM Friday morning, had grown by 72 pages to 496 pages, increasing the length of the total document to 1,071 pages.]
Of the several senators that CNSNews.com interviewed on Thursday, only Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio) claimed to have read the entire bill--and he was speaking of the preliminary version that had been approved by the Senate, not the final 999-page version that the House-Senate conference committee was still haggling over on Thursday afternoon.
When CNSNews.com asked members of both parties on Capitol Hill on Thursday whether they had read the full, final bill, not one member could say, "Yes."
And only one--Voinovich--volunteered that he had actually read the version of the bill that had passed the Senate. Both Republicans and Democrats told CNSNews.com they were eager to read the unseen bill--once they could get get their hands on a copy of the final legislation.
Nonetheless, members from both sides of the aisle in both the House and Senate admitted they doubted they would have adequate time to read the bill before they actually voted for it. “Certainly I hope to have the opportunity to go through [the bill] before the vote takes place,” said Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) told CNSNews.com. “But that’s something I’ve found doesn’t always happen around here.” Some lawmakers said one of the reasons they would not vote for the bill was because there would be no time to study it before it came up for a vote.
“The Democrats have thrown this at us very last-minute,” said Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.). “That’s why the rule of thumb in the United States Congress should be, ‘When in doubt, vote no,’ because the devil is in the details and that’s why this stimulus is not worthy of support.” Rep. John Boozman (R-Ark.) shared that sentiment. “The American public expects for us to get in and know what we’re voting on,” Boozman said. “But there are very few members from Congress that are going to have time to actually read this thing.” “This is not light reading,” Boozman added. “It’s difficult reading, it involves policy and things.” “Right now, because of those things, I will probably vote against it,” he added. Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.), President Barack Obama's successor in the Senate, seemed baffled by the thought of actually reading the entire bill--as did his press secretary. “I think it’s about 800 pages,” Burris's press secretary said before laughing lightly. “We’ll do the best we can.” Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) said that due to the hasty process, he may not have time to read the whole bill. “I will, as much as I can, get through all the changes that occurred in the conference committee,” says Thune. “That’s assuming we have time to review it prior to the vote,” he added, “This is a very rushed process, the whole process, starting from the beginning has been very rushed.” Voinovich, the only member of Congress who told CNSNews.com that he had taken the time to read through every line of the stimulus bill that had been initially approved by the Senate, said he planned to do the same for the final version of the bill that had been approved by the House-Senate conference committee.
But the Ohio Republican wasn’t sure if his colleagues would be as meticulous as he had been. “I don’t know,” he said, when asked if he thought others would read every line of the bill. “You’ll have to ask them.” The bill is expected to land on President Obama’s desk no later than Monday, and the president is expected to sign it into law--whether the nation's lawmakers have read it or not.

Senator Frank Lautenburg has admitted that he will vote to pass a bill that he has not read.....
I guess the Senators and Representatives do not need to know whats in the bill. they only need to know which of two words to use, "Yes" or "No."

Rep. John Culberson, TX claims the "stimulus" bill must be urgently voted on today -- because Speaker Nancy Pelosi is leaving at 6:00 PM for an 8 day trip to Europe!
Culberson made the charge on Houston's KSEV radio.
Pelosi is hoping to lead a delegation to Europe; there's a meeting with the Pope and an award from an Italian legislative group.
Calls to Pelosi's spokesman went unreturned.
In the rushing, Democrats have now broken their promise to have the public see the $790 billion bill for 48 hours before any vote.
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) predicted that none of his Senate colleagues would 'have the chance' to read the entire final version of the 1,071-page bill before it comes up for a final vote.
Developing...
Is there a more heinous slag than the frankenwoman who is currently Speaker of the House?

I think they (at least a few from both sides) should read, or at least commission some aids to produce accurate summaries for them to read of, the bill. We do not want another patriot act type ordeal. Since the point of the bill is to spend the US through a recession, I'll assume it's mostly pork and honestly this isn't the part of it that would concern me as much.

Not happy? Change something - bitching on the internet doesn't yield any progress. I bet none of you have even taken the time to email your representative to tell 'em how dissatisfied you are with their inability to read the whole bill.
For the one or two of you who have: good for you. For the others who haven't, learn from their example.

I am not the least bit interested in being lectured by the likes of you about the pointlessness of discussing and debating political issues here. I consider my efforts here to be educational in nature and they have actually, from testimonials I have received, been quite influential on young voters who have read them. If you do not care to debate politics go to the Pub. There is a nice friendly group of people chatting about a great many matters of tremendous import. Like whether the Dead were better with PigPen or the Godchaux sibs.

Time to plug one of my reform ideas... constitutional amendment: Nothing passed by Congress shall be longer than 500 words in length, from start to finish. Everything passed by Congress and signed into law by the US President shall expire after seven years.
Force them to keep laws simple, and give them work maintaining the important laws rather than wasting time passing new bogus laws.

500 words? that's two pages. too short - it'd be way too easy to find loopholes & manipulate/bypass the legislation.
I like the whole time-limit on legislation idea, but i feel like it'd have to be analyzed a little more before it was put into practice. i have a headache so i can't put too much thought into it now, but i like the sound of it'

Really? How about the Patriot Act of 2005 that almost entirely repeated the original Patriot Act which was set to expire as a result of the "sunset" provisions in the original bill? They had YEARS to examine that fucker. Are there any sunset provisions in this piece of shit? Fucked if I know, because nobody has read it.

I mentioned that because it's a general problem in legislation. Lawmakers have gigantic bills inflated with like 200 pages of pork at the last minute and have very limited time to read it and usually don't.

That's a bogus excuse for bad legislation. I don't see any need for these lawmakers to read each bill in a short time when they each have staffs. Even if you have a two-hundred page bill, if you have your ten staffers each read and summarize twenty pages, you can have the thing analyzed in a few hours.

Yea zappa, police state legislature is easy to keep on the books especially after it's been implemented for the past 4 years. However if 4 years down the road from this stimulus bill people don't still know what's in it then I suppose there is a problem there as well.
I somehow still doubt that the 05 version was read by many before voting as well.

For the one or two of you who have: good for you. For the others who haven't, learn from their example.
I've done my part. I'm sure by now my IP address is blocked from the senate and house website and email servers. But I still jam up the phone lines too. My senate reps are absolutely worthless and I swear I'm going to campaign for whoever runs against them. My house rep its pretty sweet, doesn't even vote along with the rest down the party line with the rest of the worthless poloskies. (I'm not republican, they are almost as bad) Wish I could go meet the pope on some Europe vacation instead of DOING MY FUCKING JOB AND RUSHING THE LARGEST SPENDING PACKAGE IN THE HISTORY OF THE MODERN WORLD WITHOUT EVEN ALLOWING TIME TO READ LET ALONE ANALISE AND DEBATE IT!
I don't think they listen though, I'm ready to start marching into the capital, who's with me?

Blended food aside, the Great One's disciples are now telling people not to expect the spending bill to help them out... it may do something by 2010, but it is going to get a lot worse before it gets better... Gee... thanks.
Quote:
President Barack Obama's aides warned Americans on Sunday not to expect instant miracles from the $787 billion economic spending bill he will sign this week, but said it would help eventually. ... it's going to take time for (change) to show up in the statistics. The president has said it's likely to get worse before it gets better.

As much as I am against much of this bill, did you really think there would be instant results?

Well fuck man, 2 months of planning for this specific challenge and this is the best he can come up with? Didn't he have a special economic advisory team and all they could come up with was this?
-------------------- "Have you ever seen what happens when a grenade goes off in a school? Do you really know what you’re doing when you order shock and awe? Are you prepared to kneel beside a dying soldier and tell him why he went to Iraq, or why he went to any war?" You seemed to have missed the part where I said I don't support it. I'm just saying any action taken to affect the economy is going to be lagged my at least measurement and perhaps even in effect.

Wrong, I emailed both senators quite recently to lay out my opposition to this massivly irresponsible theft and redistribution scheme (only those with government approval need apply). If the govenrment needs to stimulate shit then give refunds on taxes- even retroactivly.
I also communicate my opposition to the war on drugs in every email. They may not care, but they can't say they don't know.
I also like Seuss' idea but also fear it may be too short. I think a better provision is to require only one issue per bill- with definitions worked out. Stop jamming shit together.
And zappa has influenced my view. I was a bit more socialist when I came here. Too often the discussion is on what is best rather than what is right then among those choices what is best. For exmaple, how many people have questioned in the media or wherever the propriety of taking money from the buisness and people who comprise our economy and then giving it back, but only to those the government likes. Fuck that- ain't right.
Zappa's frequent discussions on whether the means are even moral to begin with has influenced my thoughts on several matters.

I never said you did but I'm just saying, for that much planning I'd expect at least one economic magic wand.

How much have we now dumped into the economy... almost 1.5 trillion? Yeah, I expect results. Perhaps the Otards are willing to sit back, spend, and wait for the magic economy fairy come improve their lives, but I set my expectations a bit higher. (I'm blaming Bush as well, before everybody gets all defensive about their Savior getting slammed.)
