Regardless of which country will do it first, it will be gradual... I actually see gradualism in terms of pot to be a worse road than sudden legalization. Why? Because I fear widespread decrim can easily give drugs of any kind a bad rep; Big time dealers get a little more cocky and less careful, even though the amount they sell could easily get them some rough prison time, and the busts start looking worse.

I could see it getting federally decriminalized. Then California would be the first to legalize it. First country tho? Canada?
Wait. If it was federally decriminalized, a state can legalize it can't they? How harsh are pot laws in Canada right now?

States can write and pass pretty much anything they want, even if it contrasts sharply with fed laws. States could legalize right now; it would run the DEA into the ground.

yes states can do that, but if the feds don't like it the states are screwed. thats what the 2nd amendments all about. state militia to fight against federal army in case of protecting state rights. feds too powerful right now though, and states have little power.

The natives have been fighting for hemp farming for years. Some are really dependant upon it. But yet while our Government allows its use, we dont allow its harvest.

I think Canada will openly do it first, since Australia, the Netherlands, and Europe are showing a conservative trend, and they will industrialize it quick. It may be the U.S. though. California has been requested to release prisoners due to funding, and cannabis is one of the few boons to their economy with over 500 dispensaries bringing in revenue. If they crack and just open up legalization for financial purposes, you'll see the federal government back down from enforcement since they can't afford to back California financially, creating a tipping point of legalization locally around the U.S. Having federal endorsement will help, but that's not where it's coming to come from

Legalization is another step of overcoming racism and respecting other peoples culture as well. The governemnt knows the real reasons that they made pot illegal, and it wasn't because it was bad for us. They know the lie, but it is had to admit the governemnt was wrong and is wrong.

Well, Somalia basically has no government right now, so I guess you could say weed is legal over there right now.

Nearly all the countries everyone mentioned in this thread are members of the United Nations. As long as these countries are in alliance with the U.N. none of them will legalize marijuana, cause the U.N. mandates drug policies that these countries need to obey if they want to keep membership in it.
I think we all need to realize that legalizing marijuana is going to be so much more difficult than we think. The U.S. has campaigned for decades about the "dangers of marijuana" and people believe it, firmly.
