I recently read a report of someone who had grown nearly one ounce, roughly 24 dried grams (many aborts were not included in the overall weight), over the course of 3 flushes from 7 1/4 pint cakes. The PF Tek and PF race were used as this was their first attempt at growing. The dunk tek and PF double-ended casing tek were applied for additional flushes. No contamination was reported, though a few cakes failed to produce more than one large mushroom on the 1st and 3rd flushes.. A fairle humble ammount.

The substrate was prepared using the PF maximum fruiting formula, in accordance to the PF Tek, and used to fill two jars instead of one. Freshly ground brown rice was used as opposed to the pre-powdered stuff bought from a store. The water used was ordinary tap water which was dechlorinated, treated to remove heavy metals, and the pH adjusted to slightly alkaline. Water treatments were done as ordinary tap water and bottled waters are typically too basic. These things may or may not have affected the final yeild.

Reportedly the cakes are still alive and the growth is rhizomorphic, though no pins are forming after nearly two weeks. Three cakes were used in a vermiculite only casing, which is now fully colonized, but is also failing to produce pins. The author of the report states that they may attempt to use the cakes to spawn some manured soil if pinning doesn't occur in the next several days.

Out of curiosity, what do you (the experienced) think are the chances for success in this situation?

I have found this persons grow log interesting and quite contradictory to the speculation surrounding 1/4 pint cakes.. I would be somewhat disappointed to see their good furtune end now.

Anyway, all feedback is welcome, but ideally no inexperienced growers should reply to the above question.

Convetional wisdom here seems to be that PF doesn't respond to casing very well. There are some people who differ on that. I think it may have to do more with the casing material(s).
