incubation
    #977531 - 10/20/02 05:04 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Hi my friend recently made an incubation chamber. its a fish tank heater in a quart jar filled with water in a plastic container. IT seems to work wonders staying right at 85*.. The only problem hes noticed is that the part of some of the jars that are facing the heated jar are drying out. he knows this cant be good. Any suggestions? Thanks

1. Turn it down to 80 so you don't kill the mycellia.
2. Rotate the jars. Try #1 first though.

85 won't kill mycelium, in fact, 86 is the ideal temp for mycelium growth.

ok... he has been rotating the jars for 2 days. I told him to lower the temp to 80 and he has done so. 85* is the optimal temp for colonization right? so how can he achieve this without drying his jars? will humidity penetrate the jars to give them moisture? Thanks

I say you just wrap your jars in a towel. By the way, turn it back up to 85, your jars will be happier. There is a chart in this post

He will try that at 80* and see if its effective then bump it to 85 if all goes well.
Thanks

Skikid is more experienced at this than I am.
I was going by the plan that compensates for any extra heat produces by the mycelliium. If you're cabinet air temp reads 85, you would add 2degrees for the internal heat, equaling 87 degrees. YMMV. Notice that Skikid has a few more posts then I do.

added>>> How old are the jars? Do you have ANY growth yet?

Posts don't mean shit, you had some good ideas, and its good that you try to help others, keep it up, and keep reading. Its funny, cause before I read any responses, one of my ideas was to rotate the jars, but then I thought it would just dry out the other side, and be a hassle. Keep it up man.

TAZ Quart jars. BRF/coco coir. 2 and a half weeks old. average colonization is 50%. Should he allow his jars to breathe? he fliped the jars so they could get some air. lids are tight and wrapped with tinfoil. Thanks to both of you. i think the towel tek is gonna do the trick tho

you used coco coir instead of verm? cool, I've never heard of it, but hey, it could work, i guess? Do the lids have holes for innoculation, if so then you shouldn't have to open them.

yea lol... he ran out of verm and experimented one rainy day. It works fine. Nice thick white myc. lots of rhizomorphic growth. Hes planning on getting some rye grain if he can find it somewhere in his city. the lids do have 4 innoc holes. you think they got enough air?

They should have plenty of air exchange, if you really are paranoid, you can flip the jars. But just have patients.
