I'm gonna go within the next few weeks with some guys who've done it a few times before. Doing it for photography. Anyone here have experience? Any tips for close encounters (stay in the car, find a building?).

Have fun and take some good shots for us to see

You said get a weather radio. Looking in google I just saw not too specific of radios. I have an emergency situation radio that also has a crank powered flash light and some other stuff (I'm sure you've seen something similar before), It has a preset for the weather, do you mean something as simple as that? And I don't have a GPS, but I assume one of them will.
*EDIT: I need to get a labtop and internet anywhere for sure.

storms around here arent fierce enough to require 1 mile viewing distance
is the point to see the lightning? or to spot tornados? or is it to like.. watch as huge bellowing clouds charge forth ahead of you?

I've been more times than I can count. Just make sure the guys that you're going with know what they are doing, if not you can end up dead. I've ended up in the middle of a storm with 65mph winds and 2 inch hail before. I have no clue how my windshield didn't crack.
As far as the photography goes, pay attention to lightning frequency and rain. Rain will destroy your camera, lightning will destroy your life. If you can stay inside or under a structure that's not a tree/metal, go for that.
That said....

I've never chased a storm. But I've observed many that have passed over me. I love to take pictures of summer thunderstorms. I won't bother to post all my lightning pics here but you can browse my gallery if you'd like to see some of them.
If I ever get the chance to see a tornado I'll probably die. I'll be too caught up in the moment to realise the danger I'm in until its too late. I've done the same thing with lightning on many occasions, but lightning is not nearly as dangerous as a tornado. Still, standing in the middle of a field with a metal tripod and realizing that the bolts are hitting ground just a few hundred yards around me is pretty stupid!

There is nothing like seeing a tornado live. Storm chasing was my favorite springtime past time when I still lived in Oklahoma. Its one of the reasons I have considered going back. When I saw the news footage of the tornado that just hit there I got super excited. I always planned on taking pics but when the funnel would come down I would end up standing where I was in awe of what was going on.

You can suggest whatever you would like. I will take that into consideration but I doubt that I will get around to it.

I was thinking one of the big southern plantation houses. I decided against it because I thought it might come of as racist and that was not the intent.
