Rye Berries

I'm wanting to switch from WBS to the more prefered Rye Berries. I know it HAS to have more of an equal consistancy, and probably better, more even saturation during it's soaking and simmering periods...
I know you find this at health food stores, so I did a search for "Health Food Stores near [my hometown & state]"
I never thought of it as a health FOOD store, but it popped up a Walgreens, which I'd overlooked before. Does anyone know if rye berries can typically be found there?

I didn't think it wood, but it popped up Walgreen Drug Storeý - Write a review 917 ***** St, ****, **ý - (***) ***-**** Category: Walgreen Food & Drug Store
So I was like.. hmm.. maybe.
Anyway, there are a few others, but I don't know if they're just local or what.
"Natural Corner" and "Natural". Other than that, it's 60miles away.

Just call around. Took me 5 tries before I found some. And it was 30 minutes away.

I second that: call around. If you don't call first, you may end up doing a lot of driving like I did because some places will have it, and some won't. I recommend a high-end grocer. In my area, PCC didn't have it, but the second Whole Foods I checked did. I had trouble finding rye berries, and I even live in a part of the country that is considered to have a high concentration of "healthy" or "green" people.
Think, "where would a vegan get their groceries around here?" and look there.

I found whole wheat berries at Wegmans for just under $2 a lb around here. Gonna try whole foods next.

Only thing with rye berries in my area they are so damn expensive.. They are like 1.50-1.99 a pound.. And WBS is so much cheaper like 15 bucks for 50lbs where Rye would cost me 100 bucks..

I've considered that. I just want to see the uniformity and consistancy in it. $2/lb should give you a couple jars, right?

I got mine at a whole-food store / farm. Cost me about 5€ for 5kg (lil more than 10lb) but I guess where I live organic grocery stores are already comon over 20 years so they are not hard to find.

I also use Whole Foods... $1.39/lbs. Don't just search for "health food," try "organic grocer." If there's a particularly high class part of your town, another chain you wouldn't expect to have manual grain distributors might have them.

Rybe berries in KY are $1.00lb. Which is still expensive considering spawning ratios. That means a 10lb bag of poo will need up to $5 worth of berries.

Well I bought about 3 lbs of grain and it has supplied me with about 10 jars. I use about 1 cup of grain per jar.

Well, I may just stick with WBS, as it appears to be just fine. As I said, I would just prefer the consistancy of EQUALLY sized and EQUALLY absorbant grains.

They are not berry's but i did some searches and I ended up trying some Winter Rye it is a bigger grain than like a rye grass seed. I have a bunch of jars prepped and just waiting on growth now. I have one that just showed it's first spot so it's wait and see time. Anyhow I get this for about .79 a Lb. If it works a feed store has a 60 lb bag for just about $24.

Fungi Perfecti
50lb bag $35.00 plus shipping.
With shipping it would cost like $75.00 for me, that makes it like $1.50/lb

also check for anything called a "CO-OP" if they don't have it, they can order rye berries for you. I had my local co-op order for me and he got his supplier to re-pack in 10lb bags because originally he said he can only get me 50lb bags. I told him I'll take 20-30 lbs per month but meed small qty at a time...he got it no prob at $.99/lb!! Also these prices are based on index commodity prices so $2/lb is ludicrous.

Can you locate a co op in the phone book ? or how do you go about finding one.
