Food Dehydrator Questions

I have tried to do a search about these but there are sooo many posts about them its hard to sift through. so i figured i would just add to it
I have never used a food dehydrator and personally dont know a thing about them. I actually had to google image them too see what they looked like
Im going to have to run out and buy one most likely within the next 2-3 days, so here come the questions ...
Which dehydrators are the best for drying Mushrooms?
Is there anything (type/brand/options/temperature/heat/effects) i should look for specifically?
Which do you use?
I have all the normal chain stores around (walmart/target/Kmart/Lowes/HomeDepot)
I havent really gone to any yet to scout out dehydrators. im not poor, but im also not looking to spend 300$ .
I was told you can buy them for around 30$ but i dont want a cheap one thats going to burn my house down
so any advice would be very appreciated!

Get one without a heating element. If it does have a heating element, you can open it up and disable it. Thats what i had to do.

The heating element is fine.
You can go to most of those stores you listed and pick one up for 40-50 bucks. Personally I use a Nesco. I would just make sure you pick up one that allows you to adjust the temperature so that you can find what you like drying at. Some people like to dry at 150F for a few hours, I like to stick around 105F for 5-8 hours depending on the load.
However, it would be worth your time to search through thrift stores and just find a used one for 5 bucks or whatever.

You should look at places like the salvation army stores ort second hand stores in your area first, you might find one for under $15.00. I have not seen any in my local Wal-Mart and Target but havent really looked in many other stores.

uh huh
I've gotten all of mine from 2nd hand stores...
probably 20 of them.
Some were never used, so they might as well have been new.
I even buy the broken ones for a $1 or 2... for the racks. Buying new racks is expensive.
I like this model...

I went around looking for dehydrators today. the only one i came across was at Target
Ronco (as seen on TV) 5 tray dehydrator: convection
it said it was convection only i think that might mean it uses heat but im not sure
has anyone ever used this?

Yeah I saw that one at target too. I didnt end up buying it cause i dont think it has a fan. It only uses heat to circulate air.
I made this drying rack by modifying a regular box fan. I just used the protective grates from the fan as the racks and flipped the fan horizontal. It works very well.

I got a Mr. Coffee dehydrator for 15 bucks off of Craigslist. It doesn't use heat and gets mushrooms cracker dry in about 2 days. I'd highly recommend it.

I love the heating abilities of a food dehydrator. Turn it up high as you can it wont take away potency in the time required to dry the shrooms, but it will help keep spawn at 83 degrees
Hardly ever unplug the dehydrator.
