Sterylizing casing materials in the oven

When sterylizing vermiculite in the oven should you let it cool inside the oven or outside?

if you sterilize it inside of a closed container in the oven, you could just take it out and throw it in the freezer... but if its in an open container you're probably just going to want to let it cool in there, or cool it with sterile water when hydrating it before use.

I just put my verm on a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil to pre-sterilize. This way you dont have to worry about taking it out or letting it cool. You can choose.
