Has anyone attempted growing a salvia plants inside a garden instead of inside a pot? How did it do? Was it better than growing it inside a pot? Also, can I add perlite to an outdoor plot? Thanks

Do you live in the south american mountainous rainforests?
If not forget about it, salvia craves humidity, soil with the proper pH and the right intensity of sunlight.

Well, I already grew them outside for an entire summer in pots and they did excellent. My question was if they will be ok in an outside plot, and now in pots..
I searched the forums and found: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4518240#4518240
So I guess I should be ok since I like in Quebec, which is right beside Ontario

if you live in canada they wouldn't survive winter that's for sure. You can grow 'em outside seamac has huge plants outside in containers and he live in san diego I'm not sure the requirements would be if you wanted to put them directly in ground just make sure it's somewhat normal ph and add gypsum if you got clay type of soil.

not really.
distgre1: you could put a salvia plant outside in the ground for the summer, no problem.

If your plants are acclimated properly, then it wouldnt be a problem at all. Of course, in the winter you will have the dig them up and pot them for the indoors, but if your up to the hassle then it would be fine. My Salvias have been in the ground for about a month now, and they love it. As long as your soil drains well, and their location is good, then they will thrive until winter. And yes, you can use perlite in the garden. Its less economical than sand or gravel, but of course it works.

I tried but not much luck they really didn't grow well for me. I also have a major problem in my area with scale bugs every time I put Saliva out side they get infested. In my garden they didn't get infested with scale bugs but the soil I have is all clay so they didn't grow at all.

Doc is correct, my sally plant does well without any humidity at all.

i am to planning on growing salvia for a wondrous garden here in good ol washington. I have slight worry that there is hardly any sunlight, but from what I've read, Salvia doesn't really like that much direct sun light. Any sites any one would suggest to order a plant? I would like to just find one locally, but I don't see that happening.

Salvias will thrive in shady conditions, and will also do quite well in some direct sun if properly acclimated. My outdoor plants get about 4 hours direct sun per day and are growing faster than those who get less light.
