I couldnt find anything that resembled these guys in my National Audubon Society's feild guide, so I was wondering if you all could help. They aren't active, I'm sure, but I'm just curious. I found them growing in the decidous forests in Tennessee, in dead leaves, not sure what kind of leaves, however. They were found in about the same location, but they were well spaced apart. They are dried now, but the gills were very close together, and white. The spore print was a very very very pale brown, almost white. Stems are hollow. They are brown in the middle of the cap and fade to white. This is my first time posting an ID request, so plz forgive if I have left anything out

oh yeh, it stinks smells like something dead and rotting. Also, the caps felt kind of flaky..... it was pretty smooth, but it made your hand feel like it does after you handle flour or something like that.

Was the cap viscid or slimy or anything when picked, or more waxy? Whats the stem feel like inside? Fleshy or fiberous?
Hmm... are the gills attached at the stem or are they notched or not attached?
Was it growing out of the dirt or off possibly some dead wood underneath or off the leaves?
Thanks

Keep in mind that I'm new to all of this The cap was waxy, like candle wax you spilled on the table and are trying to get off. The inside of the stem is fibrous like. It bruises sort of a golden brown. Has no veil. The gills are attached to the stem. The substrate in the woods where we found it could be described as leaves and dirt I guess, but, we did pull it out of the dirt. But it had leaves in it haha... sorry, im so new at this guys I know I sound stupid I'm trying tho!

Looking at my Audobon book, could it be Tricholoma sejunctum? Just a guess from someone trying to learn how to identify.

I think that they are a little too dark and dont have the black fibers that the book mentions. But hell, I'm new at this stuff, I don't really know. If that is them, the bad odor sure is right

I would ID those under the collybia genera. They resemble Collybia Umbonata aka Redwood Rooter, young specimens of this specie have a conical cap becoming planoconvex with age but the umbo persists.

As one of the others mentioned, good description. Also, great photos.
I think your mushrooms are Collybia butyracea. A couple of the characters you mentioned lead me to this. First, the unusual feel to the cap - butyracea means buttery, describing the way the cap feels to the touch. The not-quite-white spore print was very helpful. One of the really big ones is the hollow stems.
The only thing you mentioned which is a bit odd is the odor. I suspect that they picked it up from their environment or have bacteria on them producing the odor.
Here is a link to a page with identification details for this species. Please note that it is fairly variable in appearance, especially that European specimens are strikingly darker than the ones in the US.
Happy mushrooming!

Man, Im still not getting an exact ID, but, I feel its a possible Collybia dryophila...the common Collybia. Next I would think it would be the Collybia butyracea
Was it growing out of redwood debris, oak or conifer?
