Who among you wants to do something involved in psychedelics?
Ever since trying mushrooms, I have been fascinated. I would love to get into psychology/chemistry and study psychedelic's effects on the mind.

I'm pretty sure you can't get a steady job in something dedicated solely to the research of psychedelics.

I started college pursuing a degree in music management, but after experimenting with mushrooms (among other things) I am now pursuing a bachelor's degree in behavioral neuroscience.

That however, seems promising.
I'm not saying one can't go into a field with interest in psychedelia, but as a full fledged researcher in it is a bit outlandish, IMO. But, they have greatly opened me up to the fields of psychology, etc.

Well yeah. Currently I'm a biochem major, but I'm thinking about changing it to psychology or neuroscience or something along those lines.
Might even do waht Newfound_wonder has said. I know I can't specifically do something that goes along with psychedelics, all I'm saying is no matter what I do, I will find a way to link the two.

I've always wanted to be a chemist, although psychedelics made me consider pharmacology or even being a pharmacy tech as something simple. Anything where I get to study the effects of chemicals on the brain would be fantastic <3

I once toyed with the idea of going into research psychology, but after interning with a lab for a couple semesters I decided against it... I like learning about the material, but I don't particularly enjoy coming up with new experiments and crunching the numbers.

Right on man! I'm deeply fascinated by psychedelics, especially those that take you to that special place and are not just all bells and whistles. (2c-I) blah. I have been seriously stuck on the conversation of ego death and I am currently looking for a study or coursework that would be best matched to this field. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I have come to believe that in dreams you are in a complete state of ego death.. I mean think about it, whens the last time you had a dream where you said something or acted in a way that did not truly parallel feelings that you try to hide everyday? It's generally excepted that the same purity of feelings come out in a full blown trip. (Thats why some people say "fuck acid, shrooms, (insert psychedellic here) I will never do it again it was horrible", because it seems people like that either did an intense dose or are so involved in their ego ridden delusions that when the wall they have built up to block out the extraordinary falls to peices, they tend to fight it.
The other piece of this equation is simply religion. It seems like forever and a day that people see God in their dreams, or whatnot. I would also like to personally explore God and psychedelics with a very scientific mindset. It would probably not produce anything but another religious theory but, like Einstien said, Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.
In saying this I would like to find a career path (however abstract) to find some scientific validity behind my speculations. But due to the severe nature of the majority (close minders) I am not so sure a field/career path like this exists. So unless you fellow shroomies got any ideas, I am stumped
Maybe someone could hold a convention for fellow shroomies like us to come together in a sort of psychedelically charged reformation. Just a thought.

With any luck. Yes. Considering being a park ranger or some kind of tour guide. Only problem with this is the amount of people.
I want to work somewhere beautiful and somehow help to preserve it, as well as do some research into something of interest. (Which I have yet to identify) I am considering mycology.

Yes, yes I do have an interest in researching psychedelics. As I near the end of my undergraduate degree, my best option seems to be:
Go for a Ph.D in Psychology with a specialty in consciousness research. While it won't only be psychedelic states, altered states are fascinating to me in any form.

I would like to do psychedelics research.
but you know.. psychedelics are illegal
you have to be a real top psychologist or scientist or something for them to respect you and trust you enough to get you LSD. You have to prove yourself, and probably be a senior researcher.
Im thinking I could get the respect and trust easier in other fields.. and then focus on psychedelic research later

This could very well be the case. I don't think so, though. Programs used to have psychedelic training sessions, which offered all graduate students opportunities to undergo psychedelic sessions. As it became illegal, of course, this became faded out. Recently, more and more schools are publishing research about the use of psychedelics, and how to do so safely.
I anticipate a shift in the University climate in coming years. My own faculty, as well as peers, were very receptive when I presented a recently published article about psilocybin. The community is ready, and they're pushing for laws to change. Psychologists are more and more becoming involved in the lobbying process, and I can see change being very possible. The more individuals inside the field there are pressing for it, the more likely it is to happen. At the very least, I'll be one of those individuals.

It just takes a lot of effort.
You'll spend 4 years getting your BS, another 5 or so getting a Ph.D. then probably 3 more as a postdoc.
After that you'll typically land an assistant professorship. Your best bet is to have a solid are of research which gets you funds, and can finance your lab.
You'll need to sneak in the hallucinogens on the side.

Yeah, I'm almost to the graduate stage. I've already invested a great deal of time in making my record spotless. 1 term as President of the Psychology Club, 2 terms as Business Manager. No criminal history of any kind. I'm in my second semester of research, will have 4 semesters under my belt by the time I graduate, and my name on a few publications.
I've got a few ideas for Thesis/Dissertations forming already, and in fact, my Adv. Research Methods class requires us to write up a mini-thesis before the semester is out. Some students receive funding to start working on their thesis then and there. That's what I'm shooting for.
When Graduate school comes around, I'll be pushing for my other interests firstly, and psychedelics second. If opportunities arise, I'll be snatching them up. If not, I'll be building report with like minded individuals until the time is right.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Research experience will help you immensely in getting accepted to graduate school.
Your name on a publication would be icing on the cake.

How do you get funding for a thesis when you haven't even been accepted to graduate school?

It's less about being accepted to graduate school, and more about having a professor willing to stick their neck out for you. Are they willing to supervise. If so, you can get funding.
The ex-VP of the Psychology Club is currently working on her Thesis as an undergrad. She's always bitching about how much push there is on her though. Time is not on the undergrads side.

In the U.S., you need to complete a B.S., be accepted to graduate school, and form a committee to develop a Ph.D. thesis and receive a doctoral degree.
I guess it depends on your definition of "thesis" though.

Thesis is for a Masters, Dissertation for a Ph.D
Perhaps you need to have fulfilled the requirements to qualify as having a B.S. in your major, even if you don't have the cumulative credits to graduate, I'm not sure. But I can say, writing your thesis is entirely possible as an undergraduate, committee and all.
edit: Another possibility is, they will not award you credit for the Thesis until after you've officially graduated.
Thanks for some things to ask about.

Whatever I do in life I don't plan on having a normal 9-5 job and consuming like everyone else. I want to change the world, I have big dreams and I want psychedelics potential to be known amongst people. Imagine the shift in awareness. I know it's unlikely for anything to happen, even if I fail, I would of rather spent my life trying to acheive something I believe in than anything else on offer in this society. And I encourage everyone else to do this sort of thing, because if it's going to happen, someone has to start it.
