Tower Incubator
    #975623 - 10/19/02 11:25 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I recently read a posting in the grow log forum where the grower used a hollowed out computer tower as an incubator. This seems like a good idea to me but what would you use as a heat source in it and could the dust cause contaminations??? Also, would it be a good idea to leave the fans on to get rid of the dust???

The dust you find in a computer is attracted by the many small electric currents running through the CPU, motherboard, HDD, etc. Without all that shit, there isn't much to attract dust.

My old tower could easily fit 12, depending on what would need to be put in it to heat it up...

Also, anyone have any ideas as to how to hook up a heat source (aquarium heater) up to the power supply in the tower without screwing it up badly... I know enough about basic electronics, but its a new power supply and I just need to know from someone who does...

As for heat... if you're willing to severely limit how many jars you can incubate at a time, just use the computer itself for your heat source. My system temp is typically 28C, and it's nice and dark in there. The only problem is I could only use it for two jars at a time, tops.

Now that I think about it, I do believe I'll throw one of my slower jars in there and see what happens.

Oh, and don't attempt to run an aquarium heater off of your power supply. Aquarium heaters are designed to run off wall current, which is typically 115AC, which a comp's power supply does not put out. Attempting to patch the two together would involve some horrible kludge that isn't worth the effort, plus the fact that opening your power supply is quite dangerous. The simple solution would be to simply find a convenient hole in the case through which to run the power cord on the heater.

An ATX power supply (PSU) supplies the same voltage as the lighter plug in a car. So if you can find any sort of heater for a car, then can hack off of lighter connector and wire it in. The PSU has 4 wires going into a molex connector, the black ones are the ground for the neighbouring colour. One supplies 7v, the other 12v. You want 12v, but sadly I cant recall positivily which is which, but instinct tells me red.
To fire up the PSU you may have problems. Older AT models have button you can push in, but ATX does not. To solve this you find the motherboard connector, it should have one green wire, bridge that to any black wire (with a paperclip) and you're in business my friend.

As of right now, my buddy has gutted his tower and began working on the power supply. He cut off everything in the power supply, yet left the back of the connection for the AC current. He's gonna get rid of the grounding prong then just hook up a 120v aquarium heater. Im sure he can manage to get that little electrician work done. He wanted to put in a fan in just so it would seem a little more life like, at least so it would cover for the heat. Except he didnt want to leave all the organs of the power supply, so he decided that the fan would be in the computer, but wouldnt work. He patched the sides with cardboard and electrical tape. He may use aluminum foil to if he finds it safe. Yet the only concern is: would the aquarium heater cause a fire hazard inside the tower. Since it is so insulated, he was thinking of covering the cardboard with aluminum foil but he needs to know if that would work fine??? It looks real from the outside... with a floppy drive, but its all gutted on the inside as the outside is purely cosmetic. At least 18 jars can fit in it(this is if its purpose was a 1/2-pint canned-fruit warmer). The inside is covered with walls of cardboard and sealed with acrylic sealant. I need to know your opinions and suggestions. I will post pics a little later tonight.

What advantages would there be in making an incubation chamber out of a tower. I think it'd be much easier to just do it in a styrofoam cooler

Pretty much, all he's gonna do is take the 6ft computer cord and hook it up with the heater... is the cardboard a fire hazard or is having the computer on a carpet???
