My First Pedro

Today I got my first San Pedro from a couple of hippies at a market. Actually I got 2, one in a pot ($20) and a smaller one wrapped in newspaper with no roots ($10). I potted it in commercial cactus soil.
How are they looking?

Lookin great man! I had a feeling you'd be able to find some if you checked the local market...the hippies always share! Not bad prices either. Did you make sure that the un rooted one was calloused off (not moist at the cut part)? Also, remember to not water that one for at least 2 weeks, until it establishes some roots (otherwise you're risking rot). Anyway, they're lookin good and healthy, they should put on some decent height over the summer!

Looking good man, looks just like my pedro. Just watch that you don't over water and you'll be fine. From my experince, those rocks on the top of the soil tend to hold in moisture.

Damn, that's a great price! I've been paying the exorbitant prices that garden centres charge here...like $15 for a little 15cm seedling. I've only been able to find larger ones from one place -- and they've closed down. Should finally be able to get another harvest at the end of this summer tho so all is good.
Anyway, congratulations on the find man, they're some fine looking pedro's.

High, Very nice fellows!!! When you re-pot them just use normal potting commercial soil. These has more usefull nutricients like humus!!! SP needs that for a good growth.

Why the hell do you have them tied to sticks? They aren't tomato plants.

Thanks for the compliments everyone except murple. If you read my post you would know why they are tied to sticks. The bigger one was bought yesterday so it obviously came like that. The smaller one is tied to a stick because it has no roots.

umm, I don't think tying them up is necessarily good for them, it can cause marks and wear and other stuff into the flesh of the cactus.
The cacti should be potted deep enough, regardless if it has roots or not, so that it can support itself in the soil.

It also will promote weak growth. Tying them to sticks is really one of the most absurd things I've ever seen. I had a hard time believing it was real when I saw it. Get rid of those sticks ASAP... as in right now.

How deep should it be planted? It's going to have to be pretty deep to support itself, the soil is quite loose. Should the soil be packed down at all?

The soil should be packed down a little bit, but not heaps. When planting cuttings, I usually plant them 5-10cm deep, depending on size. But the most important part with cuttings is to leave about 3-4cm of space at the top, which you fill up with stones. This gives the cutting a lot of support (can barely wobble them) but it also prevents the stem from rotting. I agree, the stakes are un-necessary, but not exactly the 'most absurd' thing I've ever seen...I use 'em for transporting and thats about it... Oh, and another thing. Don't put the cutting in direct sunlight for at least two weeks. Right now it needs its energy to grow roots. If you put it in the sun, it will try to grow upwards and then will have no energy left to grow roots. Also, don't water it for at least two weeks either (assuming that the soil you planted it in was a bit moist to start off with) as this could encourage rot (it has no roots to absorb the moisture yet).

The last poster's tips are good... If you use regular commercial cactus soil, 1-2 inches is usually PLENTY for it to root. You could also try putting a thin layer of lava rock down over the soil for support... but get rid of those sticks! They will give you a weak cactus that will probably break.
