my first(!!!) weilii...so happy... yet so sad.
    #975346 - 10/19/02 09:10 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I decided to take a trip over to a hot area for weiliis with my girlfriend to do some hunting in large lawn areas.  Anyways, we did not spend too much time, nor were conditions optimal... but nevertheless, we spotted ONE.  A sad... sad little dying mushroom baking in the sun.

I hope i am not jumping the gun on this classification... so i am going to post picts for the experts.  I have only been learning about these for about a month now

So, description...
It was spotted next to a small, bedded (in pinestraw) loblolly sapling... The surrounding terrain was red clay and sporadic (and sparse) bermuda grass.  It has been about a week...?? since it has really rained and it happened to be moist in that area.

It has a dark skirt of wilted fruitbody on the cap... where it soaked, then was crisply dried by the sun... pulling up ands wrinkling.

cap had an irridescent tan color and a perky little umbo on top.  The next thing I did was smell it... oh boy.. if this is the smell it has when old and drying... i cant wait to find a fresh one!  Its a very strange odor.  very waxy almost... or even spicy at times...?!

The gills are a chocolate color with hints of purple/blue.  the stem was slightly blue stained, but after i grabbed her up, she responded more, especially around the gills on the stem.  I believe the gills are hanging and not attached... unless they have been ripped from teh stem during whatever this little guy went thru.  When  gently pressed to white paper,  i get a very dark, chocolate stain, maybe hints of purple mixed in, its very subtle due to the moisture that is pulled out from teh gills when pressing.

When i pulled her up, she had split from the cap, and she kinda fell apart.  I hope these images come thru right, i never have luck with the upload... and copy/paste of the thumb link.  im trying it 2 diff ways now... one is just the link with simple img code on either side, and the other is the code the server returns after an upload... a bit long.  so we will see...

thx to all the ATLiens that helped me out!  Moe, Gumby, Lizard and everyone who has posted info bout them.

Yep, that be a weilii, a very old one, but nonetheless a weilii. The bluing on the stem and the greenish/bulish color on the cap are a dead give away.

Good news... It's going to rain tomorrow, so check that same spot in a day or two and you'll be set.

Good find.

I had a similar first experience last weekend, except I picked two when they were really young. I regret doing so. I shouldv'e waited til they opened up so mabey some more would grow in the area. Oh well.

Suck it, Trebek!
It's tasteless, disgusting, and offensive.  I love it.

hahah... a dead bird huh?  i suppose i could see that... let me eat it, then maybe it will be easier to imagine.

Gumby, thanks!  I was wondering when we were gonna get some rain!  I am thinking of crusing some new neighborhoods here in town instead of going aroudn the suwannee area.  It was a nice drive, but i hate driving if i have to... might as well explore the possibilities of weilii in my town too!  Thx for the heads up!

Im in such a good mood, even with just finding this little old mushie!

ahhh, im in love with hunting now.

just a side note... i cut that mushroom up into small pieces and steeped them with a teabag in some water.  I know not to expect any potency as the mushroom was so old, but it was more of a taste test experiment...and... if you got it.. why not eat it!  I was expecting a bad tea... but i was pleasantly surprised... there is a definite spice taste to it!

So, try out some weilii tea sometime

hey, thats the beauty of living on the east coast... 9 outta 10 fuckers around here dont know what the hell "Vawl-Cohm" is (at least, thats how they pronounce it). heh.

I figure, once something hits the west coast, it generally takes about 10 years to get to florida... then another 5 to make it to georgia... so i have some time

besides, you gotta admit, they have some rad design concepts...

by the way.. i thought they started in Newport Beach SoCal.

im starting to feel like a helium balloon after that tea now ;;;;;;))))))))))

jfi

P.S.  I love your avatar... Alice was a really cool game.  Those shrooms sucked though...... suck your ass in and chew on you. (reversing roles i suppose!)

well, to my surprise...

that one little weilii that i made tea with gave me some pretty nice visuals! I hit threshold around an hour after ingesting and decided to lay down. The computer lights that partially illuminate my room at night and the vcr blinking made for some crazy creatures and geometrical patterns.
