Exo-Terra Solar Glo Mercury Vapour Bulb
Wattage 160 Watts
Features # Optimal levels of UVB, UVA, visual light and heat in one bulb # Self-ballasted mercury vapour bulb # Provides the benefits of natural sunlight # Helps prevent metabolic bone disease # Increased UVB penetration distance (+30 cm)
Description The Exo Terra Solar Glo Sun Simulating Lamp is the solution to one of the most important aspects of keeping reptiles and amphibians, providing the benefits of natural sunlight. The proper balance of ultraviolet light (including UVA and UVB), visual light and infrared light (heat) in one easy-to-install bulb makes the Exo Terra Solar Glo the choice of professional breeders. The Solar Glo is a full spectrum light with carefully tuned peaks to ensure appetite, activity, brilliant colours, and calcium absorption through Vitamin D3 production, and above all to prevent metabolic bone disease.
The Exo Terra Solar Glo is available in two wattages, 125 W and 160 W. Exo Terra refrained from developing lower wattages as lower wattages simply do not generate enough heat for these self-ballasted bulbs to work properly, making them unstable and unreliable.
The Exo Terra Glow Light (PT-2056) or the Exo Terra Wire Light is perfectly suited for the Exo Terra Solar Glo.
So yeah, basically my idea is that I could add this to my fluorescent set up, wondering what you all got to say about it. Basically this light is meant to mimic sunlight in the best way possible, it provides lots of UVA and UVB(of which I hear is good for a flowering cannabis plant to promote more THC production). It produces quite a bit of heat, but I'm sure I can make it work.
Basically I'm getting this light because a) it's cheap b) I already have the lamp, and c) it will add more lighting to my highly insufficient flouro set-up when the time comes for flowering.
Thoughts, concerns, advice, questions?

You'll need a ballast if you don't already have one to go with the bulb. Other than that, mercury lamps don't produce that much light on the red side of the spectrum, which makes it possible a little less suitable for flowering. It should be suitable for the vegetative stage, though. With this amount of power, you should expect to be able to effectively illuminate a 3-4sqft area, if you intend to get a decent power/yield ratio. You would need to get a bulb in the 2700K-3800K color temp range for optimal flower though, but most are in the 400-600W range and that wouldn't work with the ballast you have for this one (if you have a ballast, that is).

I have excellent results with these bulbs for Salvia, Cactus, and small mj clones. I have never flowered anything under these, but I can attest to the fact that they are great for vegging.

I've actually used Mercury vapor bulbs before during vegging, and they grew nice, healthy, robust plants.I've never seen what they do during the flowering cycle though.

Okay, well that's about all I can afford for the time being. All I need to know is if the buds will be better by adding this light.

I don't understand why anyone would want to try something that is not near as effective as a HPS, MH, or even a CFL. When researching lights kelvins, lumens, and bang for the buck is what you should look at. Nothing is better than a 600W HPS. That is fact.

this light is only gonna cost me maybe 20 bucks, tops. that's why, I don't have 150-200 bucks to put out there.

For $20 I guess its worth a shot. Not worth the time though. Let us know how it goes if you decide to do it.

For $20 I would buy a t8 shoplight 2 bulb fixture and overdrive it by putting in a 4 bulb ballast to drive the 2 bulbs by 2x. I have some here I use and they compare with T5 HO lighting "I have those too and they are expensive". or you could just buy 2 shoplight setups and use as is. 4 foot T8 flouro's are more efficient in Lumens per watt than cfls or MV. They also penetrate the canopy much better because the light doesn't come from one small spot. So if you wanna start small you get the most bang for your buck this way and can add on when you can afford it. you could at least do a SOG grow under it
I have CFL's, Teklight T5 4 bulb fixture, 175w MV's and even 1000w HPS. At the moment I only use my T8 and T5 flouros. My 65w CFL can barely keep seedlings alive lol

A friend I know on msn uses an exo-terra bulb (not sure of the kind) to give light to his San Pedro and it seems to work well...
