Hey whatz up peeps!!

Anywayz, my friends cats pet horse made up a bunch of brf/ver jars about 3 days ago, he hasn't PC them yet, just made up with filters and tape over the holes and such...He was checkin them out today, before he starts PCing them, and in a lot of the jars there is what looks like mycelium in tiny places around the jars forming...it does not look like contamination what-so-ever, but very fluffy white mycel...now he does have mushrooms growing around his stable :smile:

could this actually be from spores in the air getting into the substrate when he was mixing it up or something? Like he said, he's seen a lot of contamination in the past (every color in the spectrum he thinks..lol), but this really looks like mycelium...could it be, and should he maybe not PC a few jars and see what happens? :tongue:

lol...well your probably right, like he said he's going to PC most of them and innoculate, but he thinks he's probably going to let 3 grow or so, just to see what happens...keep postin ya'll, on what ya think it might be or what will happen.,..I'll keep ya updated!!

I'd say the odds of that being cubie mycelium are about 10 milion to one. Go ahead and let it grow, the jars are fucked anyway. :smile:

if you let your jars contaminate, the contaminants can give off nasty or toxic debris. pressure cooking will kill the contaminants but it won't do anything about the debris that's already in the jars. i'd start over.

he can always throw the 3 jars away if they turn green. at $1 a jar, thats a cheap experment.

money i don't care about as much as wasting time growing a contaminant instead of shrooms. the chances of putting un-sterilized substrate in a jar, not innoculating it and miraculously getting useful mushrooms is probably around the same chance of finding a million dollar bill laying on the sidewalk.

Sir-Contamalot agrees with it probably being a complete waste of time, but like he said, he made up a BUNCH of jars, so letting 3 of them go really isn't hurtin anything...He don't know, he just figures a lot of people do experiments on here with things, and it weird seeing what looks like mycelium growing, so just want to see what happens with them 3...Probably contamination will set in, but who knows..and if somehow by chance it does happen to be mycelium and it grows into mushrooms, he won't eat them, cause he doesn't know what kind they would be...but this just seemed like a good experiment...not a waste of his money, he has plenty of jars to innoculate for that!!

The main problem that I see is the fact that the jar is already contaminated. Contaminated substrates are messy and a pain in the ass to clean up. If you don't mind throwing away those jars whey they are overrun, go ahead and let them sit for another week or two. I can assure you that you are going to have a nice little crash course in the local bacteria and molds floating around in your air. When you finally tire of the experiment, it will probably be a good thing to just throw the jars away if they are particularly nasty. No sense exposing yourself to potential toxins when money is no object.
