How horrible. Trying to profit from human suffering. There should be no starvation anywhere on this planet if food exists and can be distributed. That article really pissed me off.

It's easier to blame the U.S. Government than to ask that the African governments get their houses in order.

They can't pay off their loans because they don't have their houses in order. The countries are terribly run. International loans, like from the World Bank are underwritten by the taxpayers of the developed countries. The bankers are protected from risk of bad loans so they make bad loans. I'm all for eliminating the two agencies that you mentioned, or totally privatizing them so the bankers will have to cover their own risky business practices. However, it takes two parties to agree to a loan, a lender and a borrower. The borrowers must accept responsibility for their actions, as the lenders should be forced to accept the risks for bad loans and not shove it off on the working stiffs in developed countries.

And of course the "loans" never went to the people in the country anyway, they went straight into the pockets of western corporations and the corrupt dictators they fund, arm and support.

The people of the country are left to "pay back" the "loans" they never saw in the first place.

That's the "free-market" in a nutshell.

That is not the "free-market" in a nutshell. The degree that markets are free is the degree that they are free of government interference, free of any favoritism, free of control or subsidies from governmental agencies or officials. Giving money to government officials to obtain favorable government contracts is quite the opposite of a free-market approach.

Why do you guys always bitch at each other? It's far worse in some other posts, but Alex123 (and I'm not saying he wouldn't have done this to you, you're all as bad as each other) made a point which was in agreement with you, indeed confirming your point and adding to it, but you had to pick out a tiny detail and try and talk him down; "apparently you don't know the meaning of the term". Anyway, I'm not sure that he wasn't being ironic, as he put "free market" in inverted commas. Jesus Christ, you may have differing opinions, but can't you just respect that, and not be so hostile all the time?

But it's absolutely ridicolous that the debts haven't been cancelled, sheer Western greed. The Jubilee 2000 anti 3rd World debt campaign was about the only thing I've ever respected the church for.

evolving got his panties in a bunch over something or other. Now it's his lifes mission to follow me around making "nasty" comments. Like it makes such a big difference in my life that some total stranger right-winger on a drug board doesn't like me.

Just ignore him. I do

Should I let falsehoods and misinformation go unchallenged?

Many people on the left blame freedom for the problems of the world in the manner in which I saw Alex doing. They mislabel something 'free-market,' or 'capitalism' and use it as an excuse to then say, "the free-market is to blame for ____" or "capitalism is to blame for ______." When in fact the blame lies somewhere else (usually in a government sponsored area), but this would not fit their agenda of increasing government control over our lives and attempting to force their notions of utopia upon their fellow man.

Ideas have consequences, and I will challenge misinformation and falsehoods where I see fit.

I will remove the offending phrase from my prior post.

What about the greed of those who borrow money without paying it back? There are at least two (2) parties in every lending transaction, each should bear the responsibilities for their decisions and actions.
