Is dunking really safe for steryle reasons?

Lots of people suggest dunking before birthing, but it seems like that would be an easy way to get your cakes contaminated. How easy is it to do this process safely and also how beneficial is it in comparison to just birthing cakes from jars? thanks

It's safe to dunk them before birthing because they would still be safely sealed in the jars.

However, once they have been birthed, case them, don't dunk them. Dunk them when they'be become totally dried out.

Use clean water, water thats been boiled and allowed to cool and you shouldn't have any problems.

Hey Max, are you saying to dunk them in the jars they're innoc'd in? Like scrape off the top layer of verm(if using), and then fill with sterile water for 12-24hrs before birthing? Would that be enough volume of water to have an effect, or should the cakes be put in a pint jar first? Just curious.

No Fred, I was just joking around. If they are just being birthed, they should not be so dry as to need to be dunked.

I dunk in straight tap water immediately after birthing and after every cake flush. The contamination risk is minimal and the flushes are much nicer.

The moment you birth a cake it is in risk of becoming contaminated . You are hoping and relying on the fact you grew a strong healthy colony that will fight off and even kill foriegn invaders . So dunking is a risk , but a helpful risk . If we were doing that method , we'd use strile water to help reduce risk of contams getting in thru water .

To further prevent contams you can mix 10 parts water and 1 part hydrogen peroxide, it worked for me, no contams.

i dunk in 1/2 pint jars with spring water straight from my water cooler...

so far ive had no problems, and the cakes seem to LOVE it!
they just fuckin EXPLODE with pins after a few days....
