what's up with all this so-called cleanliness?? a millions different brands of shampoo for daily use, followed by some shit "conditioner" (obviously because it "conditions" your hair), soap? is this really necessary? why does everyone want to smell like a goddam pharmacy?
If i'm tripping i don't feel quite right until i'm good and dirty, earth and mud, ash, leaves and stuff all through my hair - which, by the way hasn't seen comb or shampoo for about four years now and smells great! it smells like - HAIR!!
what have we become? consumers is what.

I dunno. Cleanliness is next to Godliness?
I also don't understand the spiritual/philosophical/scientific aspect of your post.

Fuckin' A man!
To me one of the ultimate hypocrasies in this world is the fact that so many people are worried about being dirty. Everything (meaning every object outside of a sterile lab environment) is dirty and "gross" if you were to look at it under a microscope. Germs and other microscopic 'mud people' have this world in the palm of their plasma, so to speak. UP WITH DIRT!
On the other hand it always makes me feel a bit better after I've washed my hands.
Really I can't think of a better way to become filthy rich than selling products that clean and kill everything ever, feeding off people's nuerosis "Kills 99% of things you'll never see!"
Sterilization does have it's upside, though, but I don't think I need to mention what that is...................

being clean tends to fit societies ideal of a society with good hygene. Also it makes us more open to positive social interactions among our peers. How many times has a clean, good smelling person approached a dirty, filthy monger?

I do it at least once a week. But I'm not normal.

ok so i said "so-called" cleanliness. meaning that i think things like dirt are plenty clean. i would much rather eat dirt than soap.
the spiritual aspect of this is that city humans are losing touch with the planet. i live in tokyo where this is perhaps more apparent than anywhere else. there are very few plants in tokyo, everything is concrete, plastic, metal, tar sealing. i know people born in tokyo who besides one school camp have NEVER been camping, never slept in a tent, never sat by a campfire, never been covered in mud. the images filling these people's heads are not those of my childhood in new zealand - not mountains, forests, not even big grassy playing fields and climbing trees - their childhoods were spent in sterile rooms - very small rooms - grey, gravel "playgrounds" - concrete and flashing neon.
take a look in your bathroom cabinet, or better yet your girlfriend's bathroom cabinet. look at all that shit, read the ingredients!! and they actually believe this is necessary, that this is what "being clean" means.
when I go camping I clean the dishes with dirt and handfuls of grass or leaves as an abrasive brush, or the little river stones swished round and round. i wash myself in the river, rubbing off dead skin and dirt with my hands - just as i do in the shower at home.
cleanliness -without the bullshit- is important to me as well.

I like to be dirty sometimes.. but usually just because i really want to make that shower 'worth it'. I love showers, they feel physically as well as mentally cleansing... Nothing like a hot shower to calm you down and clear your head.

I understand where your coming from , I think, but I just accept that washing with soap is what's done and try not worry about such trivial things. I think back when I first started tripping I went through that "back in touch with the earth" phase, I grew my hair and beard long and hunted wild herbs and such. But now, I don't care about all that. I aspire to find inner peace, and be in touch with the harmony of everthing, wether it be a tree or a brick wall. I think this passage from some song I heard back in the 80's sums it up for me- "you cannot go against nature, because when you do, go against nature, it's part of nature too"

If I understand your point, then you are using "dirty" as an analogy to vanity?

dirty as an anology to vanity? i don't understand.
one thing i read in a newspaper recently was about a study apparently showing that the increase in people with allergies and asthma in recent years has to do with an overly sterile environment in the early childhood years. not being exposed to dust, shit, leaves grass pollen all that horrible stuff outside, results in people's bodies not learning how to cope with them in later life?

I think its wrong that we got tons of different brands of shampoos and whatnot, because most of the companies just want to make money. But on the other hand, I am all for cleanliness, and technology like the soap. Besides the social benefits, it also has many health benefits, which I think is an important part of living. I like to think since I am stuck in this place (hell, or whatever you want to call it) I might as well make use of all the fascinating inventions that nature developes for my little benefits.

Jack Kerouac washed his asshole everytime he shit I'm reading Big Sur right now, and that's what he was talking about in the last chapter: how everyone makes a big deal about wearing deoderant and taking baths all the time and clean clothes but they constantly walk around with a dirty ass

I use shampoo so that I don't have greasy hair with flakes falling out of it. I use conditioner because it makes my hair feel soft. I use soap on my body so I don't smell disgusting. Hope this helps :-P

Yup, that about sums it up for me too. According to Fight Club soap is the yardstick of civilization.
-------------------- Alice came to a fork in the road. "Which road do I take?" she asked.
"Where do you want to go?" responded the Cheshire cat.
"I don't know," Alice answered.
"Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."

Why Capitalists Want to sell you Deodorant
1.BODY SMELLS ARE EROTIC AND SENSUAL-Capitalists don't like that because they are impotent and opposed to all manifestations of sensuality and sexuality.Sexually awakened ppl are potentially dangerous to capitalists and their rigid asexual system 2.BODY SMELLS REMIND US THAT WE ARE ANIMALS- Capitalists don't want to be reminded of that. Animals are dirty. They eat things off the ground. They are openly sexual. They don't wear tuxedos or corsets or have their hair done. 3.BODY SMELLS ARE UNIQUE- Everyone has their own body smell. There are millions of body smells but only a few deodorant smells. Capitalists like that. 4.DEODORANTS ARE HARMFUL-Many capitalists like that because they are always looking for a new illness to cure. Capitalists love to invent new medicines. Medicines make money for them and win them prizes. They also cause new illness so they can invent even more medicines. 5.DEODORANTS COST YOU MONEY- Capitalists are specially pleased about that. 6.DEODORANTS HIDE THE DAMAGE THAT CAPITALISTS PRODUCTS CAUSE TO YOUR BODY-eating meat and other body pollutants sold by capitalists makes you smell. Wearing pantyhose makes you smell. Capitalists don't want you to stop wearing pantyhose or eating body pollutants. 7.DEODORANT-USERS ARE INSECURE- Capitalists like insecure ppl. Insecure ppl don't start trouble. Insecure ppl also buy room freshners, hair conditioners, and makeup. 8.DEODORANTS ARE UNECESSARY- Capitalists are very proud of that and they win marketing awards for it.

You gotta be kidding! Do you realize that porn is the number one money making industry on the internet?
If you're not kidding, take off the foil hat and check yourself into a detox program.
