second flush
    #9736608 - 02/04/09 07:44 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Not much pinning has sarted on my second flush. But I do have 8 or so lil 4 inch mushies that are fruiting. I went ahead and went to the fruiting stage and introduced lite. But will I get more fruit, or do I have to just wait? I figured that Ill just have to pick those early...?

The reason to keep your colonizing substrate in the dark is because light is a pinning trigger. You want your mycelium to be in its colonization stage during this time. The introduction of pinning triggers is how you tell the mycelium that it's time to stop colonizing and start growing fruit.

My understanding is that, once fruiting conditions are introduced before the first flush, there is no "going back" to incubation conditions. This includes between flushes. You can, and should, dunk your cakes between flushes, but there is no need to reintroduce colonization conditions (darkness and/or lack of FAE) between flushes.

Just my thoughts based on what I've read. I'm not terribly experienced FYI.

By the way - just pick the fruits as they're ready to pick. Often, my cakes are constantly growing fruits and the "flushes" bleed into one another. If at some point you find your cakes fruitless, that's a good time to dunk them. If a cake has fruits of varying sizes growing on it, don't worry about dunking it right now. Just let the fruits mature and pick them when they're ripe.
