ive looked around the forums quite a bit and havent seen much conclusive evidence weather or not plastic ziploc containers are ok to use for pf tek or not. seems like some people use them and have no problems. i would just use the 1/2 pint glass jars but i am having a hard time getting them locally. ziploc containers w/ a rating of pp5 seem to work and i can get a ton right down the street really cheap. anyone had luck using plastic containers? any problems PCng? can you just treat them as any other jar? steam sterilization works w/ plastic just like jars? etc.. just looking for some current opinions and recommendations. things to watch out for...and stuff. thanks

Spongiform will have plenty to say about this Wait for him to catch this thread! He's made up a fairly nice tek for PF tek plastics that are shakable.

Check out the link in my sig, but here's my current project.

PF cakes (using my modified recipe) in pp containers ranging from 1/4 pint, 1/2 pint, pint and quart size.
Here they are about 10-11 days later:

Crumbled a bunch to a big bulk monotub:

Colonizing nicely!

It's open 100% colonized, cased and open to fruiting conditions now.

o.k. thanks Spongiform!
i think ill give it a try. seems like it works for you! sheet looks great.
question? does it matter if you use a *snap on or *press on lid? as opposed to the twist on kind?
do they mabey come off during PC'ng? due to internal pressure?
any tips of what to ignore/not worry about and what to AVOID?
any tips would make my day
thanks for the input ALL -peace

either one works fine, the snap on lids do at least. you need a way for it to get gas exchange though, like a hole in the lid covered with micropore.. or a hole and a dry verm layer. i would suggest using these holes for the injection too as to not mutilate your containers any further. if the container isnt sealed, it won't pop off. if it does just pop it back before you remove the foil, as you need to wrap the tops in foil anyways.
also, i don't know if it's a good idea to have them touching the bottom of the pan.

Snap on lids with larger ziploc containers(Qt. tubs IME) seem to pop off.
Some, however, did not.
I found on the next batch that if I wrapped the foil tightly under the lid prior to PCing the lids would stay on a little better.

If you want to do PF in these, stick to the 1/2 pint ziplocks.. or at least at first. The larger ones are more prone to contams, as they take longer to colonize. Maybe throw in a larger one after you have at least made some smaller ones if you really want to.

Probably good advice. This is more of an experiment for me, I'm probably going to stick to good ol WBS. Although this does cut out a lot of the prep work.

Also, stay away from Rubbermaid brand containers. The lids are LDPE, which is not PC safe.

I have not tried rubbermaid yet. Always wrap the lid tightly with tinfoil and tuck it under the lip. This keeps water from going in/out during cooking.
I think right now my favorites are 1/4 pints, 1/2 pints and quart sized containers.
That 1.25 pint cake only took about 1 day longer then rest.
The downside to the ziploc twist n locs is that the lids crack somewhat easy, so you need to be extra careful when prepping the lids.
