wow, DIRECT sunlight is a BEAST
    #9706568 - 01/30/09 04:11 PM (15 years, 20 days ago)

So recently I read on the shroomery a few posts from rogerrabbit saying that leaving your terrarium in direct sunlight for 5-10 minutes a day can actually boost your pinset greatly so I decided to experiment.

Now I only had one cake left from my recent grow and it already had 3 pretty big pins and its on its second flush. One of the pins was actually completely white with mycelium even on the cap, it didn't look healthy at all and when this happens it usually aborts for me. So two days ago I switched over to indirect sunlight from a window for 8 hours a day with 10 minutes of direct sunlight. After the FIRST day of direct sunlight I got 3 bran new pins, and not only that the white pin head turned completely golden brown and looks ten times healthier! Then the next day I did it again and when I woke up I had an EXPLOSION of pins more than I ever had on any cake I did before,I can say there is easily 20 pins on it now.

All of the cakes that I ever did were above average but now I can say this is an expert cake. I am 100% certain this is from the direct sunlight because all other conditions were kept exactly the same. From now I'm not gonna do anything else but this and if you are doing cakes I highly recommend trying this and seeing for yourself!

If direct sun is good for a couple minutes, couldn't one use a full spectrum bulb for a couple minutes a day to get the same effect?

Doubtful. You don't get things like vitamin D from lightbulbs that you get from the sun. It obviously has different properties that we are unable to reproduce.

Sunlight does not have vitamin d lol. Your skin produces vitamin d when it is exposed to UV light.

EDIT: the wavelength of UV that triggers you skin cells to produce Vit. D will not even go through glass anyway so unless you left the window open (would suck right now cause its freezing) it wouldnt even matter anyway.

You use a UV lamp and I'll continue going outside every once in a while, we'll see who develops a vitamin D deficiency....

Somewhat related, this article does state that:
Quote:

According to the research, you won't get much relief from "full-spectrum light bulbs," the kind you find in the supermarket or from widely advertised lamps such as the "Ott" light.

Of course the article is not talking about mushrooms, it is talking about how sunlight affects mood. They describe how full spectrum lights don't do much to replace the sun.

Furthermore:
Quote:

No matter what kind of light you buy, make sure that it's UV-shielded. UV light increases your risk of cataracts and a more serious eye disorder called "macular degeneration." Tanning lights are a definite "no" because they emit a considerable amount of UV light and can increase your risk of certain skin cancers.

If u listen to some of paul stamets' lectures on shrooms and light.  he suggested shrooms use the radiation in the sun light.  but I myself dont know this I just watched him on youtube vids and he talked about it. "6 ways mushrooms can save the earth"

Nope. Sunlight is just different than a lamp you buy at the store. Don't expect me to know the science behind it because I don't study light or ever intend to.
My point is that we, as human beings, do not know/understand/possess the ability to copy the sun's light. Thus when they say 'direct sunlight helps' you can't just replace it with a full spectrum bulb.

Page 13 in the GGMM, he says that mushrooms like to have some sunlight and don't like prolonged exposure. He is pretty specific that it is SUN light that they like, not just any type of light.

One thing the sun has that we simply can't reproduce is its intensity. about 3.8 x 10^26 Watts from a distance of 93 million miles... it's about 68.4 x 10^26 lumens, which is ridiculously intense light. by comparison, a 1000w HPS bulb is about 135000 lumens. the intensity of the sun is about a trillion trillion (yes, trillion squared) times as intense as an hps. So the sun has penetrating power unlike anything we can produce and its spectrum is unique as a single source

i'm definitely gonna try this... good to know

Try an HPS or MH light and you're gettin damn close to the sun. But no. Not for shrooms. Cool.
