I set out 12 pf style cakes with b+ spores in them like....5 days ago. Being the idiot that i am i thought it would be alright to just let them sit in my closet, assuming that it wasn't THAT cold. well i checked up on them yesterday and it was freaking freezing and none of the jars had mycelium growing on them, so i put a heating pad underneath with the lowest power on so i wouldn't heat it up too much and when i checked on it today, it was REALLY hot and still no growth. Well now i am going to put the heating pad on top over the blankets so not much heat is transferring to the jars but still keep a constant temperature. Did i mess up or is there still a chance???

I would not be too worried about the cold but the heat could definitely be a problem. Mycelia croaks at 106F. I'm not sure about spores but I don't think they can tolerate much more than that.

104* - 106*F is thermal death of spores and mycelium . Temps lower than 68*F will cause dormancy in growth . For best results germinate and grow mycelium in 82*-86*F , any variance above or below optimum growth temp , will result is slowed or halted growth, but will recover if brought into and maintained at optimum temp range . Yes get an "ambient" temp maintained , direct contact may cause "hot spots" , you want an even overall temp in incubation area . Good Luck Hope this helps

Thank ya thank ya very much (Elvis impersonation) , that is pretty cool little setup , I am lucky cabinet above my oven is perfect temp all year long , as far as humidity goes , I rely on moisture in the jars of grain , but I like that, may try it out .

i did the samething with the heating pad. I checked it and my jars were at 100F for 2 days!! If you put the pad on top of the jars it makes it around 85...well it did for me at least. All 6 jars are colonzing strong.

Be careful with a heating pad, besides having a tendency to dry out jars, they are a fire hazard. Good luck.
