Right on! I've taken an early retirement so it's feasible for me to move out there and not need income. I am however not thrilled about the winters. I come from Michigan so have had my fill of the cold. However if there is some good icefishing that would overcome all reluctance and all the lakes and rivers are open to fishing during winter which is really very cool indeed.
Since you grew up out there, I would like to ask where you would choose to settle and why. Knowing that I love to fish, (especially isolated streams) do you have any suggestions for me?
Nice! The winters deter many people from living out there, at least where I grew up. However, there is excellent steelhead and even salmon fishing in Hell's Canyon during the winter, and I personally loved the snowmobiling in the mtns, so the winters were gravy to me. My friends hunt sheds or birds (and smoke mass mota) during the winter to stave off boredom, which can come around hard in the off-season. Hard to beat the WX we've had down here in the SW though; you won't find this over there.
If I could live anywhere out there, my absolute first choice would be exactly where I lived before on Eagle Creek, outside of Richland. A drive up the creek during the warmer months will explain why this is my choice; to me it is nearly perfection. Secondly, I'd opt for Halfway / Pine Valley. For one thing, the valley is stunningly beautiful. For another, I have a lot of friends who live there, or at least try to make it back often like myself. From here you have close access to the Wallowas, the Snake/Hell's Canyon, Eagle Creek, the Imnaha (particularly awesome for the type of fishing you describe), and even Seven Devils ( ) aren't that far. The whole area is pretty well secluded from any major thoroughfares. Sparta is also nice, and QUIET! It all depends on what you're aiming for. More desert plains, or forest/mountainous? How much snow do you want to deal with? How close to a store or town?
I never spent much time on the N. end of the Wallowas, like around Joseph and Enterprise (and Lostine as well if I'm not mistaken), but it seems pretty cool up there too; Joseph especially seems like a more liberal town than the lot of that general area. However, there's also a lot more people over there.

Icelander, thanks for the response, I'm not necessarily looking for thru trails, I really want to take my time and enjoy the areas I'm passing through. This means possibly stopping in towns and working for a few weeks before I move on, I mean to take every opportunity to explore, fish, and just generally explore.
I'm not really looking for trails to take, more landmarks and beautiful spots to explore, any little gems you locals know about would be a safely kept secret with me;).

Shit brother. I'm looking forward to picking your brain on Monday. I'll be looking for the loincloth. I have one that I made from a deer I brain tanned. I haven't worn it in years except at Burning Man once.

I would surely take the eastern route if you at all like high desert and dig vast vistas. If you PM me I can recommend a book or two that would be very helpful.

Nice. Oregon is a wonderland IMO. Desert, Ocean, Wet coast, Midland forest, Mountains galore. Not too many people. When I was a kid in Michigan I dreamed of living in a place like this.

Take a look at Cape Lookout outside of Tillamook. Great hiking, great views, good camping.

Cool man. From that view it looks really forested on the far side of the river. So is there a trail/road along that section of the river or what?

There are lots of trails. I did not take that picture, but it is relativity close to town. I can walk to the river itself in about 20 minutes, as well as the Columbia.

Icelander said: Then going east are the fabled Owyhee's and their mini grand canyon like terrain and isolation. I'm guessing this is the least used and visited part of Oregon, all in the lower SE part of the state.
The Owyhee's are DOPE! I've had the great fortune of buzzin around out there in helicopters on several occasions, I'll try to find some pics. Really some spectacular country. Weren't the Owyhees the stomping grounds for fabled Claude Dallas in his days of glory and government entanglements? They just passed a big wilderness bill that included provisions for establishing wilderness in the Owyhees; I wonder how much and where exactly.
Some Owyhee pics:

You can drive up to here. The pic after this shows the treasure that lies up this draw, known as "Jump Creek".

After catching a glimpse of this pool during the flight I became determined to go find it and hang out there after we came back. Spent awhile driving around the desert looking for it, but eventually found it and damn was it worth the effort!

This ace has it figured out...

That first awesome (enlarged) pic is now on my desktop. Looks like a fairly easy drop into the canyon. Most of that vast Owyhee region looks like this in general. Can be hard to get down into the canyons however. Few trek it and most boat it. Some areas have been rarely visited in modern time. The most difficult white water in Oregon. Oregon, Idaho and Nevada is part of it. The least used area in the Mainland US and much of it unchanged from the early days. Hard to get into on foot and hard to get back out. If you want to be alone boys and test your meddle then this is your place. I hope your car don't break and the water don't run out and you don't get snake bit or break a leg. But if the desert is in your blood this is the place.

Damn I love the high desert. I've been living in the wet parts of WA for a year now, but I'm itching to get to the desert again.
