Where do you hike? I like the Trout Creek Mts. and the Pubelos.

Heya Icelander, I'm gonna be doing a roadtrip through Oregon this spring. I don't know much about the hiking trails myself but if you'd give some insight on great trails with waterfalls and beautiful photogenic scenery that isn't hiked much, as well as coastal trails with rivers that lead to the ocean (those are my favorite, I end up getting myself superlost and taking massive amounts of photos, then just trailing a stream to the coastline and finding camp again. The real trick is when you get to the coast, which way do you go? :P

Stick to the coast for waterfalls and lush. I'm out in the Desert although I do go to the coast to fish. Have fun.

Actually it's gratifying to see so few people here from Oregon.

I like to hike at Powell Butte. But I really should think about really venturing outside the Portland metro area sometime.

Strawberry Mountain is a great place. Can't go wrong with the Wallawa(sp?) mountains by Joseph, Oregon either.
In fact the whole Hells Canyon area is basically the shit.

I've hiked on the Lostine river. That area is the shit. I want to see more of it. I want to do Hell's canyon in the next year or two. I'm in the opposite (SW) corner of the state. I really like the SE and really all of the Eastern part of Oregon. I may just move out that way in the next few years.

Hell yeah, glad to see some mutual appreciation for Eastern Oregon. Like Icelander I also live in the SW corner, but I try to make it back to the east side as often as possible, it's mah stompin grounds for sure. The Wallowa's and Hell's Canyon are the straight dope! I was fortunate to grow up on a ranch out there. Best of all there's not many people out that way, and particularly for Hell's Canyon, people are deterred from some of the better spots by the how steep that shit is.
If you guys are heading out there, I can tell you about a badass hot spring that's pretty easy to get to just south of Hell's Canyon. There's no signs so it's basically all word of mouth (thankfully). Plus give me a holler because I might be out that way anyway and am keen on showing people around.
My dream is to be able to live and prosper out there. It's a fucking gem!
I've often wished to check out Strawberry as well; I drive through there often and it looks fucking majestic. Another excellent spot is Christmas Valley, literally out in the middle of the high desert. Strangely enough there was a big festival out there last year that I went to called 'One Family Gathering'. I highly recommend camping out there near the Crack in the Ground.
BTW there's a ton of forest service cabins and lookouts available for rental (good prices too) all over the state. I can't recall the excact website but you can google that shit. Something I've always wanted to do as well.
Basically, E. OR FTW!
There's some cool spots out here in SW OR as well, like Selma. (If you can find it on a map in vicinity to Selma, go camp at Bolan Lake sometime in the summer) The Illinois River is BEAUTIFUL! I fought fires out there last summer and would like to spend more time in that area.

there is a waterfall on the trail between big strawberry lake and little strawberry lake. when i passed that waterfall there were huge chunks of ice taller and wider than me just sitting on the ground. that was late may/early june. lots of fungus growing, i wish i could have identified them. none looked active but there were just lots of different kinds.

There is no desert in the SW. I have to drive out. I was just saying I live in the SW. The Pubelos are the mountain range that continues on down south below the Steins and actually goes slightly into Nevada. It's rarely used and very beautiful. Next going east come the Trout Creek Mountains which I have also hiked in extensively and never ever come across another person hiking or camping. (I'm sure the locals are out during hunting season) Then going east are the fabled Owyhee's and their mini grand canyon like terrain and isolation. I'm guessing this is the least used and visited part of Oregon, all in the lower SE part of the state.
My first hike in this year will be the North Fork Malhuer. It's a canyon stretch that is designated wild and scenic. The canyon stretch is said to hold Redband trout fifteen to twenty inches. I'm excited because I've never been there.

Right on! I've taken an early retirement so it's feasible for me to move out there and not need income. I am however not thrilled about the winters. I come from Michigan so have had my fill of the cold. However if there is some good icefishing that would overcome all reluctance and all the lakes and rivers are open to fishing during winter which is really very cool indeed.
Since you grew up out there, I would like to ask where you would choose to settle and why. Knowing that I love to fish, (especially isolated streams) do you have any suggestions for me?

Rattlesnakes are on my menu when going solo. However I choose them last because they are so fucking beautiful and cool. I prefer sage hens. Then cottontails that live along the canyon streams. Then robins.

Never even been near that area.
I would be very curious to find one person from the Shroomery that lived in southeastern Or. I may have to become that rep.

I'm gonna be travelling on a thru-hike down washington, oregon and California then eventually on down to South America and I'm wondering; What's the best route to take through Oregon? I sort of want to stay close to the coast, but if there are any exceptionally beautiful places I'm more than willing to take a detour, I certainly won't be in any hurry during this trip.

The only thru trail I know of is the PCT. I'm not sure if the desert trail is finished from Calif to Wash but I would highly recommend that one if it is. I don't hike trails anymore unless they're game trails so maybe someone else knows something.

The Owyhee's are DOPE! I've had the great fortune of buzzin around out there in helicopters on several occasions, I'll try to find some pics. Really some spectacular country. Weren't the Owyhees the stomping grounds for fabled Claude Dallas in his days of glory and government entanglements? They just passed a big wilderness bill that included provisions for establishing wilderness in the Owyhees; I wonder how much and where exactly.
Some Owyhee pics:

You can drive up to here. The pic after this shows the treasure that lies up this draw, known as "Jump Creek".

After catching a glimpse of this pool during the flight I became determined to go find it and hang out there after we came back. Spent awhile driving around the desert looking for it, but eventually found it and damn was it worth the effort!

This ace has it figured out...
