Intuition
    #964923 - 10/16/02 12:42 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

This was just a last minute thought as I posted my A.I. thread........Can intuition ever be an acceptable parameter when debating philosophy. It can't be empirically verified. It is such a huge part of every human being yet it goes to waste. How can we integrate it into philosophy/debate/science?

Good question.
Check out pragmatism (William James)... intuition fits nicely (as long as it is consistent).

It depends on which connotation of "intuition" you mean.

If you claim, "Such and such must be so because my intuition tells me it is so," your claim has no validity.

But if you use "intuition" in the sense of a special shortcut to deductive reason, then it is a legitimate tool. For example, experienced cops KNOW when a car drives by that is "dirty". They find it impossible to explain it to a civilian exactly HOW they know, but their deductions are invariably correct.

It's the same when I read a dodgy statement here on the message board. A little warning light goes off in my head that something is not right with that statement, even though I may not immediately consciously realize what exactly is wrong with it. Sometimes I have to poke at it with a pointed stick for a while before I find the flaw. My "intuition" triggered my suspicion.

Absolutely. Our intuition is a valuable source for philosophical fodder.

Great point!
I like the cop example.

I would have to agree with pinky on his statement on intuition. There are no 'facts' to back up someone's intuitional 'feeling' accept to let time pass and see if your intuitions prove to be right. After a while, one (hopefully) learns to trust the little 'voice' or 'feeling' they have. I have found that the first 'reaction' or 'thoughts' I have about something are generally right...its only when I start analizing that first feeling I got...or questioning the validity of the feeling that I start to stray away from what I 'know' is right.
Intuition is a wonderful thing to master...but one also must be careful that he is not taking himself into or out of something based on 'intuition' alone. * I hope this makes sence to someone! LOL becasue it did to me!*

Basically Intutition is a "hunch". Sometimes can be wrong, sometimes can be right. how do you really know when it is right or wrong?

Every time I have a 'hunch', it is accompanied by another 'hunch' in direct opposition to the other, and then the various I's start throwing random hunches all over for the sole purpose of confusing me. They can't be distinguished from each other either. Getting into arguments with myself and not knowing which side I'm on. I seem to have acquired some malicious demons, if only psychological constructs. So no intuition for me.

The 'shortcut' thing is cool. That's part of how I learn. First I build a model of the thing in my head based on explanation and evidence. Then I play with the model and/or the thing, finding various things I can do and reducing them into 'functions' I can apply quickly without remembering the model in it's entirety. However, this process must be watched to prevent automation from siezing control over automator.

Intuition, obsession, inspiration, intuition, obsession, inspiration.....

Its often how breakthroughs are made.

Intuition

Obsession
1:Compulsive preoccupation with a fixed idea or an unwanted feeling or emotion, often accompanied by symptoms of anxiety.
2:A compulsive, often unreasonable idea or emotion.

Was it William James?

It's basically Zen... by Western thinkers. If you don't see it, you're not looking at it right. I'm not just being a snooty elitist.

I agree with this in a sense (I find myself to be very pragmatic) but it doesn't jive well when trying to convince others of your viewpoint. I have no problem resolving my own intuition with my own beliefs and daily actions, but I doubt you would follow me if I lead by intuition.

There's certainly no doubt in my mind intuition exist, explaining it is the hard part. Like cops for instance, I get a gut instinct that there is something very wrong with someone who wants to be a cop almost like an evil vibration emanating from them.
When I'm around them they seem very ignorant to me like they permenantly reside in a lower circuit. But, all of this is just a strong feeling they give me without any real thought attached. Is it from fear of being arrested and beaten or am I on to something? I also get feeling like this from lots of other people, I guess the only way I can describe it is bad vibes. Do I just dislike them for the way they look or act or am I picking up something I don't think about conciously?
