just to let you know, Samhain is not the same as Halloween. for Halloween, i'm going to take my son trick-or-treating and gorge myself on goodies (checkin for razor blades and poison, of course ). for Samhain, i'm performing a ritual that will (hopefully) end in contacting a dead relative. for those that don't know, Samhain is the time when the barrier between the worlds is the thinnest, and it's easiest to contact the 'other side'...

Correct. In ancient times, Samhain was celebrated between the Fall equinox and Winter Solstice, which is around Nov 5- Nov 7. With the advent of the Gregorian Calender, it is believed the Pagans moved Samhain near Oct 31st. Most Wiccans celebrate Samhain around this day, but not usually on the 31st because of possible interruptions during their ceremonies. Samhain corresponds to the beginning of the cold season when the veil btween this world and the next is the thinnest. (As the Celts believed)

I don't trust wiccans, something about a religion that was created in the 60's....

Now I've always been interested in ancient magick and witchcraft and all that.  I had a friend once, an Odinist skinhead.  If you can imagine a cross between a wiccan hippie and a right-wing racialist skinhead, then you'd get this guy.  He was always doing weird rituals and stuff, he's the only pagan skin I've ever met, but he swore up and down there were lots more.  I think their beliefs are a cross between nordic mythological deities and Mein Kampf.  He was a nice guy and could drink anyone under the table, but I never really trusted him for some reason.  Plus somehow I don't think paganism and nazism is the best combination of spiritual/political beliefs.  He actually worshipped Odin for christ's sake.  Interesting stuff, I'd like to know more about the Odinists, however crazy it is.

Didn't say ya were!   Hell, I'll admit it, in Jr. High I was thinking about becoming one.  Magick rituals and stuff like just always fascinated me, whether I believe in it or not.  Everyone at school thought I worshipped satan once because I kept checking out books on witchcraft in the 6 th grade and all thru jr. high.  They had WEIRD books for an elementary school library.  This one had chants written out that ancient witches used to conjure demons and all kinds of spells and stuff.  Even had a recipe for that nightshade "flying" ointment, altho it didn't say the witches didn't actually fly, they were just tripping their asses off, but oh well.

Most the odinist I know where at one time in jail and that is where they started doing the more nordic stuff.  As for the made up religon stuff, all religons remake themselves and make stuff up as they go along so no big deal to me

I too will be trippin mad balls in overalls.  Got some nice shrooms and I am planning on getting jiggey with the earth spirits and mabey some dead relatives.  Look for me naked running down a street near you.

Since I just moved, and I'm new in town, I have no idea. I guess we'll just see what happens...

However, I have always wanted to go to Oaxaca that time of the year for the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations, and someday I will make that pilgrimage...

October 31 is when we celebrate it in these here parts. Or at least it is when I choose to celebrate. I always feel the most energy in the air during october. Also, we have a very nice full moon coming up on monday.
