Losing Hope
    #968868 - 10/17/02 01:49 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Hi everyone. You don't me, but I know you  Just been too lazy to register. Anyway, I really suck at mushroom hunting :frown: Me and girlfriend have been hunting like 4 times in the past week or so, all on wet and cool days, and all we can seem to find are Destroying Angels :frown: While now, thanks to this site, I'm very interested in mushrooms in general, and enjoying finding and identifying all kinds, I am getting very disappointed not finding any active ones. I have never tripped on mushrooms before and I really look foward to testing them out, but I just can't seem to find ANYTHING active. I live in SE Tennessee... can any of you guys tell me what the problem is?

So in this dense jungle of cow crap i can expect little hope in finding anything good? :frown: Damn.

I have another question. From reading about Aminitas on the site, it seems that its ok to eat Fly Agarics? I have found quite a few or those, should I take them?

Im sure you'd be ablet to find something as long as you looked in the right places...

I really am not too familiar with TN, however, it seems like its a humid place.

If you just look in as many cow fields you're probably bound to find something cubensis like

Look in horse-stables and well manacured grasses and lawns to look for some Panaeolus subbalteatus.

And remember, you've only hunted THIS past week!!! I mean, variations over time, over weeks or months can lead to discoveries. Temperatures and rainfall might just not be perfect for the mushrooms to grow. Just wait, keep on going and dont give up, you're bound to find something.

Everytime you go out, you'll get smarter and get a more intuitive sense onto where some might be growing.

Eh... You've got about a 1 in 1000 chance of finding P. cubensis in TN. Not common at all that far north.

Thank you all so much  I feel more encouraged  Sorry I myself haven't replied in awhile, I had to go to work :frown: I have a question for you guys tho, I have found ample aminita muscaria here, but I have heard of people having good experiences, and some people having very bad. If any of you guys have tried it, what do you think of it? Also another question, does it make any difference if you hunt at night or day? Thank yall so much, you guys kick ass! I'm going hunting tonight man! Must seek out the gymnopilus

Also, does anyone know of a list or something that has all the active mushrooms? Until today I thought only ones with the name "Psylocybe" (or however the hell you spell it) and stuntz blue foot were the only hallucinogenics, but now I have learned of Big Laughing Gym... Mushrooms are so exciting

Not to shoot anyones hopes down, or to piss off moe, but I call BS on the weilii being found in TN unti I see proof. He is either yanking your chain, or found something that looked similar but wasn't weilii, or a bit of both. Moe, you've only been finding weilii for a few weeks, and I don't recall you posting about a trip to tennessee in the past few weeks, nor have I noticed your absence indicating you were out of town. I have a very good friend who was my weilii picking buddy that moved to southeren TN two years ago. He has been searching long and hard all over the entire state for two years with no luck, he still drives down to GA to come picking with me a few weeks out of the year. If there were weilii to be found in TN, he'd be the man to find them, he knows exactly where to look. The reason for the absence of weilii in TN is the regional change, anything above the the N. GA mountains is a completely different region, and almost a natural barrier like the cascades in WA. The climate is also very different. Weilii thrives in piedmont regions, this we know. It hasn't been found in any other region to date. Souhtern TN is very mountainous(is that a word?) and I can gurantee you wouldn't find weilii in the mountains, the soil makeup is completely different as well as the weather is.

So until I see some proof, weilii is unique to GA only so far.

However, I have very high suspicions(gut instinct) that weilii can be found in alabama and south carolina, maybe north carolina but its doubtful. This isn;t to say I wouldn't look in other states such as tennessee, you never know what you might find. If anyone does find them in another state, you need to prove it, save and dry the specimens, and send them to Dr. Guzman for ID and documentation. This would be a very important discovery and would definitely need to be verified and recorded so that we can map the range of weilii. Next year I am going to do some serious searching in both SC and Alabama to see what I can come up with. It'd be great to know that these things are more widespread than just the small area of metro ATL. It'd suck if weilii was another azure, unique only to a small range of land. My guess is that SC and alabama have weilii, just not as many, as they have yet to under go the large scale developement that ATL has been going through for the past decade. There aren't nearly as many new subdivisions in these two states, and the ones you find are far and inbetween, and usually too new to support weilii.

LK,

Holy crap... I just saw a ton of what I believe to be Aminita Pantherina's, but the book says they are rare in the east :frown: But one of you guys said they grow in Tennessee? Is it an actual Pantherina or no? And if it is, is it cool to eat? I'm guessing it would be similar to muscaria high?

So you think maybe they are too dangerous to try, or should I give a very small dose a shot?
