Dead Space.
    #9686780 - 01/27/09 01:25 AM (15 years, 2 months ago)

Bioshock was talking a bunch of bullshit claiming to be the successor of System Shock 2.

Dead Space hit the nail on the head, I think. It's like a heavy-handed re-imagining of the game, but one that leaves in a lot of what made it awesome.

My only complaint is I wish I could see the stats of weapons in the store before buying them... instead of having to go all the way to a workbench to check.

Bioshock was the "spiritual" successor of System Shock 2.

"A spiritual successor, sometimes called a spiritual sequel or a companion piece, is a successor to a work of fiction. Instead of being a standard sequel, a spiritual successor does not directly continue a story within the same fictional universe. However, a spiritual successor shares genres, themes, styles, and (often) creators with the previous work.

While this term can apply to almost any media, it has most commonly been used with video games."

I thought Dead Space was fucking dumb.

I'm gonna rent it in the near future and play it through, give it a second chance. Everyone seems to love it. If it still sucks then I'm gonna be pissed.

Just finished it on medium :awesome:

I wish the military suit and the carried-over equipment could be used in the next difficulty level up, though. That would be a cool way to encourage replays: start out on easy, and each time you finish it unlocks something and lets you keep the gear when you roll up to medium, then hard, then impossible...

Yeah me too.  That fucking sucks, why would you play through it on medium again just to get the military suit...

it's because EA wants you to spend extra cash to replay the harder difficulties with the downloadable suits :crankey:

i was pretty mad about this too. i really wanted to continue and upgrade the rest of the guns. by the time i finished it on medium i only had 2 maxed out, and the pistol at about half.

Dead Space has some awesome scenes, but it's just too linear to be considered "great". I like the zero G stuff and the different weapons... but whenever a game goes from point A to B to C to D with no openness, it loses some points.

Bioshock was just so original looking and had a fresh feel to it...

As I went along through the game my opinion of it changed a bit.

At first it got off to a good start but it eventually just kept repeating the same challenges and encounters with different flavors. Had the pace been kept with new situations and challenges appearing throughout it would have been pretty good by linear FPS standards.

There is also nothing specifically wrong with a linear game as long as they make it fun to keep going.

It was scary at first because you kept seeing new things and didn't know yet if something would pop up and kick your ass. But after a while it gets pretty obvious that you've pretty much seen it all and know exactly how to mop the floor with whatever you run into. The only thing that changes is that you're eventually pwning more and more of them at once.

They should have taken a lesson from Silent Hill (the good ones, not the one about the retard trucker with ADD and a death wish)

Hopefully they take this into account when making the sequel, the game definitely has potential.

i just picked this game up last night.. so far it's kind of fun.

but one thing about it that i find extremely frustrating is that you have to shoot the limbs off to kill the creatures...

shoot the arms?  are you kidding me!?

after years of being conditioned (rightfully so) to aim for the head, now i have to go against instinct and aim for these skinny bones jones alien arms waiving all over the damn place... :nonono:

what a stupid idea that was... seems like something they added in last minute because the game was too easy otherwise.

A good FPS player is conditioned to aim where it's most efficient.

I like the change. Plus, some of the alien things get REALLY fast eventually, so shooting the legs off becomes second nature.

There's a good reason that you get that line gun early on, of course. It's really handy for snapping one or two limbs off with one shot without having to aim too much (at least until the enemies get tougher and it takes more damage.

And, you can mod the beam to be even wider. Line gun is good for when it's hard to aim precisely.

Also, invest nodes in your stasis thing early, and often, and try to crowd enemies together before using it, so it gets the whole group. Then you can dutifully sever limbs while they writhe in slo-mo.

Personally, I fucking hated dead space. I got the PS3 demo and played it for like 5 minutes.

However Bishock was fucking awesome.

I can't wait for Bioshock 2.  Apparently its part prequel, and part sequel as well. It will be so cool if you get to witness the gradual downfall of Rapture.  I'm thinking of cryogenically freezing myself to the date it comes out.
