Psychedelic users- less than 1% of the population?

I just got thinking this- other than marijuana, which I would guess has to have a few million users out there, what percent of the population are users of psychedelics like mushrooms and lsd? anyone got any idea?
Find this question interesting........
I also gotta say this, but it sucks that psychedelics are looked down upon like they are addictive drugs, we need some change in the world! Highly doubt it will ever happen though this lsd is starting to kick in a bit. woe

Everyone who has used LSD or shrooms should be locked up.
Throw in all the pot heads too.

I don't know what the percentage that uses it is, but its more than 1%. I know a lot of people who have done shrooms and who are down to do more, they just dont actively seek them out. I'd say around 2-3% if I had to make a guess.

I'm glad psychedelics are out of the reach of mass media and popular culture. Imagine the kind of damage that could be done by corporations if they used the concept of shrooms or LSD to sell a product. The psychedelic experience would be taken over by corporate interests and we'd be seeing Taco Bell and Nike logos flying by during DMT trips...
They aren't that hard to get, and those who really want to find them will find them. The only problem is freeing the minds of the hordes who are convinced psychedelics are poison.

I seriously doubt 3% of the population uses psychedelics. That would mean 180,000,000 psychedelic users worldwide. I highly doubt it's that many.

I think .01% of the population are/were psychedellic users(multiple uses).
1/200 people has tripped before advertantly or inadvertantly would be my guess.

People are afraid of their own minds.
I talked to a couple of my buddies who love to "party hard" with alcohol and I asked them why they wouldn't want to try psychedelics "I'm scared I'll tweak out."

At first I thought it was only myself and maybe 6-7 other kids in my school who did them. I'm finding out its more around sayyy 20 ish kids who have at least tried them. I'm in a school of about 1000 kids.
20\1000 = 2\100 = 1\50 = 2%
However I live in a school with these statistics as of 2007...
Quote:
Male students (%): 52.5% Here: 52.5% State average from 3564 schools: 51.7%
Female students (%): 47.5% Here: 47.5% State average from 3564 schools: 48.3%
White students (%): 98.3% Here: 98.3% State average from 3564 schools: 71.0%
African American students (%): 0.2% Here: 0.2% State average from 3564 schools: 8.9%
Hispanic students (%): 0.3% This school: 0.3% State average from 3564 schools: 13.2%
Asian students (%): 0.2% Here: 0.2% State average from 3564 schools: 4.5%
Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander students (%): 0.10% Here: 0.10% State average from 3564 schools: 0.19%
Multi-Race Non-Hispanic students (%): 0.9% Here: 0.9% State average from 3564 schools: 1.9%
First Language Not English # : 5 Special Education # : 115 Low-Income # : 44 Free Lunch # : 33 Reduced Lunch # : 11
First Language Not English %: 0.5% This school: 0.5% State average from 1653 schools: 15.3%
Special Education %: 11.5% Here: 11.5% State average from 1778 schools: 16.4%
Low-Income %: 4.4% Here: 4.4% State average from 1776 schools: 31.2%
Free Lunch %: 3.3% Here: 3.3% State average from 1774 schools: 25.4%
Reduced Lunch %: 1.1% Duxbury High School: 1.1% State average from 1719 schools: 6.0%
Suburban, upper class, white community
Maybe if everyone contributed information about their HS from which they graduated we could get an accurate picture.

"man why would I want to see stuff that's just weird"
and I'm thinking that the upper class white kid school does more psychedelics then a school with a bunch of blacks and mexicans.

I'm willing to bet the majority of professional artists and writers have tried LSD and/or a similar drug at some point.
Other than that, I'm not sure.

I suspect people would be both shocked by how few people regularly do/did psychedelics, yet also shocked by who does them.

I just thought some more on this. To me, having done a psychedelic isn't significant. It's having done them and seen past the the shallow "wow" stuff and gone on to recognize the deeper meaning of what they are able to gain access to on psychedelics. I have a sibling who has done psychedelics a few times, but seems genuinely unaware of why I view them as something more than a fun time, like booze or something. They're so wrapped up in the minutia of life and the games we play that I know for certain they didn't "get it." And I suspect there are lots of people out there (and in here for that matter) with the same perspective--that it's all just a way to have a good time.
So generally, having done psychedelics is a bit like getting a driver's license and a car. Yeah, wow, neato. But what really matters is where you go with it. I'd really like to know how many of THOSE people are out there.

I don't remember the exact number, but an interesting stat. is stated in "Shrooms" by Andy Lecter. A lot of people have tried mushrooms, but a lot of them do not repeat the substance. I'll post the exact paragraph later.
I think Salvia is probably an even greater example of this. I know a lot of kids who have smoked salvia, I know very few who smoked it again.

I personally didn't care for salvia- felt like I was fighting to come back to earth, love (lsd, shrooms,XTC,peyote, well i guess i could go on forever).
back to the original topic: I thought there were just a few "Free minded" people at my high school (in Iowa-mostly white) But was pleasantly surprised at a rave when a good number of my classmates showed up. Some I had pegged correctly-Some I would have put at the bottom of my "never in a million years list". I guess you can't judge a book by it's cover, and until everyone just opens up to let you read them no one will EVER get an accurate percentage. We had to fill out an anonymous survey my senior year- I had friends that lied about the drugs they used because they didn't want their parents to find out???? Our society will never be honest about such things (as long as others are judgmental) for fear of retaliation/reaction/stereotyping.
I take mind altering drugs and am proud to admit it. Will I go around telling everyone I meet, not until I'm retired and don't give a fVcK what anyone thinks.

I'd say its probably 5%.. a lot of people have dosed shrooms or LSD in their life...
Psychedelics have been making their rounds through highschools since the late 60's early 70's and make their way into many teens systems.

Take into account that in the U.S. only about 3% of the population are regular marijuana users. About 5-6% have even smoked pot in the last year and these stats are probably overestimating use.
Psychedelic use is likely to be far lower.

Actually, the US has about 13% regular cannabis use. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/lif_can_use-lifestyle-cannabis-use
Lifetime cannabis use is second highest in the world, at a whopping 41%: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_use_by_country

Interesting statistics in light of NORMLS, which is where I got mine.

I guess this goes to show how difficult this is to assess.

This is interesting, I too fear that business may brand the "psychedelic experience" into a set of products for consumers to buy. Especially when you take a look at all the mass produced tie-dye shirts and peace symbols.
Look at the African-American civil rights movement. Today their culture has been heavily influenced by consumerism and branding. So many rappers come out spouting hatred against corporations or at least rich whites, while simultaneously being sponsored by them. It hurts the young African-Americans who see them as role models and encourages them to spend their life reaching for a false-dream of blind servitude.
edit: Sorry about the necro, one more mistake learned I suppose.

Don't worry, it's okay, some people hate it when others resurrect threads though. Interesting thread though.
