Operationalizing Happiness
    #9682662 - 01/26/09 01:49 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

One of the key concepts in the sciences (especially the social sciences) is operationalization of your variables. In order to measure something that everyone has different conceptions of accurately, it's important to agree on a definition of the variable in question in observable terms.

In a philosophical forum happiness is a constantly recurring topic. But are we talking about the same thing?

Although there is most definitely a very large internal component to happiness, let's focus on the outward, observable and measurable signs of happiness. You may say that some who look happy are unhappy and vice versa, but there must be some signs that distinguish a happy person.

I think an important contributor to happiness are the presence of basic necessities such as water, food, shelter, health, social support and a means of survival. It's safe to say that without most of these things, one's happiness will be elusive and intermittent. It's a foundation to start from.

How do you operationalize happiness?
Do you think a definition can be agreed upon?

Happyness is undefined as its infinite, but i would say the closest words that come to me right now are fulfillment, bliss, love, unification

It isnt a smile or a laugh, its just inner fulfillment, being free of desire or the fulfillment of a desire

To operationalize happyness is to distance yourself from it & place it as something apart from yourself to strive for, no thankyou

:peace:
