colonization/birthing orientation
    #966932 - 10/16/02 06:40 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

pftek 1/2 pint jar cakes were colonized initially (first 2.5 weeks) right-side-up (with the clean verm layer at the top), then at 2.5 weeks, the tape over holes was removed and replaced with coffee filters, and the jars were turned over (this was to speed colonization).

Now it's birthing time, and there's confusion about birthing them verm layer down or up?  Also, in either case, does an additional layer of verm on top (so now on both top and bottom of cake) help fruiting?  Believe that was read somewhere in these boards.  Also, in FAQ it says to birth verm layer down,  but also many places say birth according to orientation during incubation.  Can someone clarify, please?

In my experience it makes little difference which way the cake is placed after birthing. Putting damp verm on both the bottom and top will help keep the cake hydrated.

Ive seen great results with placing the cake on a slighly damp layer of verm, known as a launchpad. This acts like a mini casing, and could stimulate growth of pins down near the bottom.

I think its also good to leave some of the dry verm on top, and leave it on top during birthing, misting it, and having that moist as well, will create more healthy pins.
