Tough Stir Plate
    #9672187 - 01/24/09 07:20 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

I wanted to stop highjacking Cavemans thread so its moved over here.

Here it is again.

The box is from Eecol electric.

Its basically an outdoor electrical box. It comes with a rubber gasket and its 4x4x4. You should be able to find something comparable in really any hardware store with an electrical section.

I used a foam bottom as a spacer to raise the fan up and hot glued it to the bottom, then glued the fan to the foam. Use cardboard or similar items to shift the height of the fan inside the space. Contact cement frikkin blows...hot glue is where its at.

The fan is a 3 speed manual switch fan which saved me a pot and resistors. Which was this one.

Magnet from a harddrive...and I stuck it in a vice and took a grinder to the edges so that it was more balanced. Then used double sided tape to find the center, then hot glued.

Stir bars, made of galvanized tie wire doubled up and cut at 1 inch (don't have a pic yet). Work great and free.

Transformer from thrift store ripped out of a cordless phone and answering machines. Usually between 7 & 12 volts depending on how fast you want your 3 speeds.

The container was 4" deep...the fan being 2" thick + the magnet rounded it to almost 3". So the foam works as a vibration dampener + a rise to get the fan and magnet closer to the lid.

:rockon:Nice, I should make a stir plate, I have seen the pictures of what they are capable of.

nicejob!

Awesome. I love the simple concepts with maximum result..

Nice job, I made mine out of thin plywood and attached it straight to the wood with counter sink holes. I also added a pot and a double switch.... I have two plates in one container. It works quite well, but is not the quietest thing in the world.

....Did someone say motorcycle maintenance?

It breaks up clumps = makes it easier to suck up LC in a syringe... and you get more even syringes.

Additionally it has been argued that the small broken up pieces of mycelium grow separately thus multiplying the growth speed.

It's great for LCs. The LC will colonize much faster on a stirrer. Plus it will help breaking up the big clumps of mycelium. In effect, you'll get a much more homogeneous LC.

so is it constantly on or do you flick it on here and there? does this have the same effect as putting a marble inside and just shaking it?

You can do either. It mixes MUCH better than using a marble.

Screw the marble. I don't do constantly. I hook it up to a timer (I use timers and sensors for everything in this hobby, basically) and give the LC a fifteen minute stir every 2 hours.

I had tried other methods with screwing it to this and plating with that...but I figured if anything would work best, its using vibration absorbing material with simplicity in mind, -=glue=-.

I personally run it off and on...sometimes take it off and put it back on. The great thing about 3 speed is low will keep it churning and happy...but if you want to really mash the ever living hell out of that myc, you put it on high and the myc gets shredded into a cloud. Far superior to the marble/broken glass. It's been working surprisingly well.

Kahuna, which timers are your fave? Have you been using a modded Intermatic/Gear style? I've been trying to decide on what to do about my timer woes since I can't find anything under 30 minute intervals without spending $110 (I'm thinking I'll mod an Intermatic, they look pretty bloody simple to mod but I haven't gotten to it yet). I wonder if a Woods brand would work just the same for modding.

Found them here...3 Speed Fan

Really...all you gotta do is search Antec, then find their 3 Speed, which is always listed in the name.

If you lay a line of silicone down on plastic wrap put a nail on it and cover the nail with silicone caulking they make good stir bars too, won't rust either and can be PCd.
