liquid culture question
    #9669271 - 01/24/09 03:09 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

i have a liquid culture thats been sitting in my refrigerator for over a year now.  there are no signs of mold and the mycelium still looks good but is very dense from not being shaken.  do u think this is still viable for inoculation?  i want to make new liquid cultures from if into some 500ml erlenmeyer flasks.

on a side note i want to buy a magnetic stirrer but all the ones i see are like 120 bucks.  where can i find one on the cheap?

Just make your own. I made mine today, and it cost me $0.00

If the magnet, wire, motor and transformer fairy comes to visit I could make one for $0.00 too

i found one one ebay for cheap so i think ill go that way rather than make my own.  more importantly tho was my question about my liquid culture.  i plan on making more of it.  how long can these be viable if kept refrigerated?  i have it in a normal 1pt. canning jar with lid and filter disk i made from small sheets of material used to filter air ducts and it seemed to work well.

i remember reading a VERY good liquid culture technique, using honey / sugar in the raw, about a year ago.  does anyone have that handy so i can bookmark it perhaps?

Magnet- Old Harddrive
Motor- Fan (cost $15 if you had to buy new)
Transformer- $0.25 ripped out of phone/answering machine at thrift store.
Hold Glue- $0.25
Electrical Box- $13 (made it alot easier to stabilize and hold jars on top)

 Made 6 of 'em, two for a fellow member.

Im lazy, so I didnt even use glue. I actually used pore tape to hold the magnet in place. IT took me hours to find the sweet spot because the magnets I harvested from a HDD were kinda small compared to ones seen in the techs. Heres my first LC that I made this week with the Sugar in the Raw tech.

I did a comparison project recently.

I'd just use plain old sugar in the raw.  1 packet per cup of water is fine.
