Time between sterilization and inoculation.
    #5746019 - 06/13/06 02:41 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Hi, just wondering what is the longest one could wait to inoculate after sterilizing? I have already sterilized and and my spores have been back ordered. Also, I was unable to find medium vermiculite but I did manage to find medium-fine vermiculite. What will the differences be?

So, any time after 9 hours is fine? Even if it is a week?

when i grew mushrooms i would usally wait a week or so before knocking my jars up. It gives contams a chance to show themselves if they weren't all knocked out during pc'ing.

So to answer your question, a week will be perfectly fine.

I usually wait overnight, but I've made some really successful jars after only waiting 3 or 4 hours-cool to the touch is key.

When you PC your jars, you're starting a race. That race is between the spores and contaminants and the goal is who can take over the jar first. By waiting to inoculate you're giving the contaminants a head-start. Your spores might still win the race but do you really want to risk your time and money?

The second issue is with your inoculate (presumably some kind of grain) drying out. The longer you wait to inoculate, the less water will exist inside your jars/bags.

So to answer your question, you could theoretically wait weeks. In reality I'd say waiting longer than a week is a bad idea. Ideally, the next day.

OKay I'm going to run into this issue because when I start I'll be borrowing a pressure cooker and not on my own time scale.  So I'll be waiting at least a week or two before inoculation.

The thing the last guy posted just didn't make sense to me but I am new at this.  If it'sproperly sterilized then there should be no contaminates assuming you keep it covered and sealed.  Wouldn't waiting actually be a good thing by ensuring there are no contaminates at this stage?

Not so.

COMPLETE sterilization would take 48 hours or longer at 15 psi and would turn our substrates into a worthless slurry.  By sterilizing for an hour, we give the mushroom mycelium a head start on the contaminants that will naturally develop over the next few weeks.

Wait until you're ready to inoculate, and then sterilize.  Not before.

Roger that!  Thanks for the clarification.  That explains a lot.
