Having problems IDing these! Cortinarius possibly?
    #965909 - 10/16/02 03:03 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Hey guys.

Well, these are my first mushrooms found this season, so I was just so happy to pick them up and be happy about the winter rainy season coming up ahead!!

I have been having a lot of problems ID'ing them because they seem so damn normal looking.

Here's some pictures:

The side view of a mature specimen and younger one.

The gills underneath.

The viscid cap.

Here's the description:

Cap: 8cm in diameter, pale cream to buff and white; viscid; umbonate to uplifted when mature

Gills: Darker cream color to light brown, adnexed, the gills are deep.

Sporeprint: Cinnimon brown

Stalk: White, not viscid, fleshy, bruises a light brown, 2cm in diameter, solid. There is no veil present.

Habitat: Growing underneath or on conifer (I think) wood chips in a garden right next to a sprinkler. Im not sure if it was growing underneath the woodchip bed or in the soil below. Im almost thinking it was growing in the soil because the stems have soil on them!

Thanks if anyone can help....Im just not finding it :frown:

Well Viscid,

Russula was my other idea. I really dont know if they are corts, it was just my guess.

What species of russula do they look like to you?

damn, angry, they look like half the russulas in any book.
lots of white russulas.
almost as many as white with red caps.
seriously, i dunno.
when i', confronted with a russula, my first objective is freshness.
then on  to acrid/not acrid.
then idecide if there are enough to get a meal with.
then i walk right past them and hope i find something better to eat.
i eat the green russulas.  and the purple ones.
olivaceous, varicolor, xerampelina, and a couple others are good eatin.
that one was prolly hot as hell. like as in the center of the earth-kind-a-hot.
i always taste a russula if unsure, but then again, i always have lots of water on hand.
peace.
russulas are pretty tough on id'ers. sorry

Yeah... I hear you .

Thats what I was sayin, I couldnt really get a positive ID because its so damn common looking!

Well I dont really care, cause I threw it out anyways...just the texture of the thing didn't interest me at all. Plus, I was thinking it was not edible.

I was just so excited because that was my first fleshy-fungi find this rainy year. Havent really found much else!
