Cedar Chips? * 1
    #963868 - 10/15/02 06:18 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Does anyone know of any gourmet mushrooms that like Cedar chips?

Does anyone have a link handy that gives an easy rundown on how to cultivate these?

It kind of interests me to start growing some legal, gourmet mushrooms, possibly for market. If anyone has any experience with any of this, please reply! Thanks!

mushrooms wont grow on cedar chips, the oils in cedar wood act as a natural fungicide.
some mushroom species will grow on douglas fir and/or pine, but most prefer hardwoods such as alder or oak.
standard tek for wood eaters is to generate grain spawn from pure cultures, innoculate grain to sterilized sawdust, innoculate sawdust to sterilized enriched sawdust, then initiate fruiting.
if you want to grow gourmets for market your best bet given time, money & effort is to grow oyster mushrooms on pastuerized straw.
growing shiitake outdoors on oak logs is also fairly easy, though would take longer & require much more initial effort.

The only way i would think it would work is if The cedar was composted so that the natural fungicids are broken down. But that still may not work. Your best bet is some type of hardwood. Good Luck................peace

Go to a pet store and get aspen chips if you are in a bind.
They will work.

He was just asking because I bet he lives in a place with lots of local cedar.

a little mushroom told me that its actually the aeromats that the oils produce that kill the fungi. Once composted until they stop smelling, ceder chips should work.

What if they were really old cedar chips that had been used as mulch for a few years?

about a week ago I through half of a contaminated jar on top of some decorative cedar mulch in front of my house not thinking it would do anything because of the pH in the mulch but to my surprise the mycelium has started to spread and is consuming the cedar chips slowly, but surely

I am a mushroom hunter as well as a grower.  I always carefully check the local trees when I have a find. Cedar trees suck.  I have yet to find an edible on or under a cedar tree, unless there were better trees nearby.

Did you know that the projected life for a cedar shingle roof is twenty five to forty years ?  That compares to about 15 for asphalt shingles.

We have a lot of cedar hereabouts too, and it is expensive for the very reason that fungus don't like it.

I would look for a better option.

Good growing,

Jeff
