What's your take on these. Edit pic update 1-26
    #9658490 - 01/22/09 02:03 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Here are some pics of some cakes that I have been having some problems with. They were handled a bit when dunking and harvesting some of the mini sized fruits. I can't really tell if they are recovering or if the bruise is actually some type of contaminate. Noting seems to be overly aggressive and doesn't swab off with a Q tip but that doesn't always mean that your in the clear from what I have read. I would like to get the opinion of some more experienced growers. It almost appears that the mycelium is trying to grow more and is taking over some of the old pins and knots.

Here are the pics its two cakes taken from different sides.
#1 #2 #3 #4 #5

Looking forward to what others think for the prognosis of these little guys.

Edit -  1/26
Been keeping moisture up and making sure to Fan for additional FAE but they are looking off. No signs of new growth on cakes. I sliced off a corner of one cake to check internal color and see if it would initiate a site of growth. Here are the pics I just took.

Really looking for feedback here. I think they are contaminated but haven't had enough experience with contaminated stuff to know for sure.

Looks fine to me.  Bruising won't hurt your cakes too much.

What do you think about the overgrowth?

It looks like your RH is too low.
Do you have a hydrometer?
how long did you dunk for and were the cakes completely submerged?

The way your mycelium kinda has that shiny look to it, along with the bruising makes me think your rh or moisture is too low. If it is fuzzing back up that's a good thing though.

I did an initial dunk of about 24 hrs completely under water I use Ziplock with all the air pushed out. I then also had them sit in a dish of water to soak up from the bottom for 24 hrs later. the RH is about 95%. I have 3 plus of perlite in the bottom with a bit of standing water in the very bottom layer.

The daytime temp is at about 72 and night drops to about 68. 12/12 for the light.

Get the standing water out of your fc it is a harbor for contaminates and hinders evaporation.  What type of fc is it in the first place? apparently not a shotgun

Its just a tub with a number of air holes filled with polly fill.

Thanks I'll suck out that extra moisture.

You need to drill holes in the bottom as well.  Have you calibrated your hydrometer?

Yes it is calibrated.

What do you mean by drilling holes in the bottom? what purpose will this serve? I have holes right at the perlite level for CO2 escape.

airflow, evaporation, humidity. read about a shotgun, which is what you have, just a f'd up version.  For cakes you want 100% humidity, 95 will work if you hydrometer is right.  What is your ambient rh?
