i'll be sowing my seeds very very soon, some straight to the ground in random locations and some in seed trays for transplanting later on.
good luck with your poppy grow in 2009

Why do 99.999% of the seeds I plant die?
A lot sprout but a few weeks later they are mostly dead.
Last year I planted a couple oz's of seeds and got many thousands of sprouts and a half dozen of them made it to full size.

Can poppy's stand cold at a young age, or do you guys start them inside and move them out when it's warm so they can grow to be bigger? I'm intending to grow some this spring, but I don't know when to start.

they could well be damping off as the man said. where are you starting your seeds alan?

yes they can withstand cold weather no problem. if the seed is sown outside in autumn often it will germinate before winter hits and the seedlings will over winter.
now is the best time to sow seed outdoors though, while it is still cold.

Gotcha. Would you germinate in soil? Or do the wet toil tek like with what people do with cannabis, and then plant in ground? Once the seeds have germinated are they sensitive? Hmm I guess I've got some reading to do on growing poppies.

poppy seeds are way too small to do the wet towel tek. i don't take much care about sowing the seed, it is just tossed on the ground where i want them to grow usually lol but sometimes i germ them in jiffy cubes or seed trays, if you do that make sure you sow the seed extremely thinly because they do not divide up or transplant well. disturb the roots and they usually die.
EDIT: see the thread stickied at the top of this forum. "from poppy seed to opium" that will tell you everything you could possibly ever need to know about poppies

Hello guys, I tried about 600 gigs last year in my feilds. good yeild and all, but much to improve on my growing. my mom threw out all my gig seeds, but im sure thousands fell on the ground. this year in the greenhouse I have about 550 hens and chicks started. miice ate maybe 50 of those so I have to retransplant. and yes, transplanting isn't that harmful to them, they jus need alot of h20 and shade during this time. I also have about 75-100 persian blues going for transplant as well. I just ordered a strain called "wizard of oz", somn of course. more gigs, and I have bagseed if you will from pods from online vendors. So I'm looking forward, yes indeeedyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

is it winter there? i don't know lol... alot of people mulch their poppy patches with manure to stop the soil from drying out and to give nutrients.
