the guy nod

so on my way to class today i ran into this girl i'm kind of friends with. she criticized me for always giving her "the guy nod." it took me a second to realize what she meant, but when i started to think about it, i really do nod to just about everyone i see that i know. it's kind of like an informal way of saying "hey." i don't remember ever consciously deciding to do this though. it's just become somewhat of a habit. do you guys do the "guy nod" to your friends, and girls, does it bother you when guys do this to you?
also, where did you guys pick up this behavior? is it something you do consciously, or is it just a natural reaction?

It's usually accompanied by a rhetorical "What's up?" Unless one of us has headphones on, or we're passing on the Oval. Then I just nod.

Haha...Now that I think about it, I do do that. Or else I raise my eyebrows and smile.

I nod at strangers, too.
I think it's a sign given by alpha-males to their subjects that they may carry on.

oh definitely. its like, 'i'm choosing to acknowledge your presence, but I don't want to directly interact with you.'
i get when you give people the guy nod and then they try to start up a conversation. learn the rules, goddamnit.

I give the nod to anyone I see as "respectable" but not in a hoighty-toighty way.

Haha... this shit is hilarious.
I also do the guy nod... Well, not very often now, but occasionally. I picked it up through stoner friends who thought they were hot shit, basically. It's some stupid ego bullshit for sure, which is why I don't do it consciously anymore. I use it on people I don't care about enough to stop and start a conversation with at work sometimes.
It's a single quick upward tip of the chin, then back down at about half-speed.
Hahaha. I never bothered to laugh at myself for this shit before. Thanks.
And much like Mr. Lion, I also often do the "lift eyebrows and smile/smirk"... I think I do that with the feminine types, and the up-nod with dudes.
It definitely feels weird to give a chick the guy nod. Like a subtle embarassment that I didn't more carefully assess the situation and use the correct expression... :P

I give the guy nod to tomboyish type girls. They like that kinda thing generally.
Some people (both male and female) get offended by it.

Yes, I said feminine types, meaning women who are quite effeminate. I imagine I might feel funny doing that shit to a really effeminate gay guy, too.

Ah, I thought you meant feminine types as sort of hipster slang for "females".

Oh, oh, I just figured it out: The "guy-nod" is this super adapted greeting that allows a man to greet another man non-verbally without smiling at all. (Smiles mean your gay for him, obviously!!)

Naw, I'm trying to keep my conversing gender-ambiguous these days. Most of my friends are like 60/40 mixes, so to speak. (Not physically, but in personality type between masculine/feminine)

I give the nod to everyone I know and a friendly "How's it going" or "What's the story?". I don't think it has anything to do with ego it's just how I salute someone.

I almost started my post with that and decided it was just too gay.
But...
Yeah, I do that shit all the time. It's a respectful way to acknowledge someone and you never know who's gonna bust out with the five finger deathpunch.

yeah i don't think the nod always implies competition. it is a good way to avoid conversations though. like when you're walking past someone and you get that kind of awkward feeling, a quick nod of acknowledgment saves face and keeps you from looking like an asshole and ignoring them.
