Gumby's How To Not Suck At The Internet Tutorial (Help me update it!) * 9
    #9649739 - 01/20/09 11:47 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Alright, I repair computers for my job and for friends. I'm sick of you motherfuckers asking me to fix your slow ass computer. The reason your shit is slow is because you suck at the internet. And I'm gonna tell you sons of bitches how to not suck at the internet. This post is for Windows users, so back off you elitist Linux and Mac assholes.

1. If your computer is slow, download Adaware and SpyBot. Update both of them and run them. No, not at the same time you retard. One after the other.

3/31/2010 update: If your computer-retarded ass is still having problems, then try downloading Malwarebytes and running it. Also try CCleaner to clean your registry of all the shit that has been added by the programs your dumbass unknowingly downloaded and installed. It'll make your shit run faster. Like NOS, but for a computer. Ok, no, not really. But it helps a lot.

2. If you're using Internet Explorer you're a dumb son of a whore. Stop that shit. Download FireFox. Install it, use it. Remember, Internet Explorer is useless shit that is full of security flaws.

3. Download the Adblock Plus add-on for Firefox. It blocks almost every source of those burn-a-hole-in-your-fucking-retina flashing ads, and consequently, most sources of adware and spyware. Fans of streaming porn be warned: it has fucked with my ability to use RedTube and Spankwire. My solution: Google Chrome, another browser with a low likelihood of allowing ad/spyware/virus infections. It has the added bonus feature of "incognito mode," an option that leaves no history of your browsing. No one will ever know about your horse porn and gay black men fetishes.

4. If you use ANY file sharing network (torrents, soulseek, limewire, etc.) download PeerBlock 2. This software will block your dumbass from connecting to anyone who might sue the living shit out of you for illegal downloading. When setup asks what you want to block, I'd recommend checking the boxes for P2P, Ads, and Spyware. Also be sure to check the "Allow HTTP" box otherwise websites ain't gonna work... And that means no Shroomery.

5. If you use AIM and you're using that new-fangled Triton version... You're a tard. It's an incredible resource hog and will slow your shit down like grandpa Moses. Oldschool AIM is the way to go. Download AIM 5.9.6089 and install it. Then download Middleman, a plugin for AIM that allows you to block the ads, eliminate the useless toolbars at the bottom of buddylist window, tabs windows, logs convos, and allows you to rename your buddies. You'd be stupid not to use Middleman.

3/31/2010 update: Looking back on it, my dumbass should have looked into some of the multiclient IM programs, seeing how I use AIM, Gchat, Facebook, and IRC. I was running about 4 different chat programs when I could have just been running one. I'm currently using Digsby, which supports AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Gchat, Facebook, and MySpace IM(who uses that shit?). Digsby is bitchin' because it has a lot of themes and a ton of options on how you want things laid out. It also has a very clean look to it. And! it does all the same shit that Middleman does. There are plenty of other multiclient IM programs out there click here to see which one fits you best.

6. Lastly, consider buying or torrenting some kind of antivirus program. I'd recommend buying it, it's worth supporting them. My personal reccomendation is one of Trend Micro's products like PC Cillin. I've been using Trend Micro's products for about 12 years and have never been infected with a virus. I've had a few, but they never got around to infecting me. An added benefit: their products also scan/block adware and spyware. If you're too cheap for a real antivirus program, try AVG. Update all your shit frequently, viruses and malware are created frequently.

3/31/2010 update: Fuck TrendMicro. I was using their OfficeScan antivirus provided by my university and the sons of bitches started saying which websites I could and couldn't go to. Fuck that shit. If I wanna look up something illegal, thats my fucking right you bastards. So yeah, like I said fuck them. After reading reviews I switched to BitDefender. S'aight, runs in the background and shit and I don't even notice it. Another excellent antivirus program is Kapersky. Lastly, if your cheap computer tard ass doesn't know how to "obtain" the high end antivirus software, look into Microsoft Security Essentials, cuz it's free. I put that shit on my netbook. I've been to my fair share of pornsites on that netbook and no viruses yet, so I guess it works.

Also very important: If you have antivirus or antimalware installed, these should be the ONLY programs notifying you of an infection. If you see something on a webpage or get a popup on your computer from another program saying "You are infected with teh.super.fux.ur.computard.up virus, click here to fix it!" DON'T CLICK THAT. Only the programs you have installed to protect your computer will pop up telling. Any other source of "hey dude ur computer's fucked up, click here" popup will likely install a virus or malware. You can thank Platinum for that tip.

There you go. Now stop asking me to fix your computers because you suck at the internet you fuckerfaces.

I'm good with computers but I still use IE6. I'm too lazy to get used to Firefox.

But it's so easy just to double click the blue circle.

and it doesn't have updates or add ons.

but then again it's starting to crash a lot and not work on many webpages.

IE has updates, they're just included with Windows updates. FireFox checks for updates automatically. All you have to do to update is restart FireFox. Any it remembers the webpages you had open the last time you closed it. It even gives you the option to reopen pages from last session or start a new session.

i've been running into some weird acrobat trojan with firefox... i don't know i ran adaware and spybot, but every so often my firefox will just go to an IP address that is a blank acrobat file that hogs all my system resources.

i'm not concerned though.

Try doing a system scan with that. It's an intertubez based virus/malware scan. Does the same thing their virus scan software would do but doesn't offer any real time protection.

Might I add, HijackThis!, a tad more advanced, but really does the trick. You can post your logs in our security forum, or there's several forums that deal directly with HJT log files.

I hate antivirus proggy's.

All of them tend to be system hogs, and if you secure your system properly, I don't see a need to have it running. A decent firewall such as ZoneAlarm and don't visit crazy ass sites, keep Spybot and Adaware updated, run em every month, etc, you can keep yourself pretty safe.

I didn't mention HJT because I figured that the people who are out there using IE and getting malware wouldn't know how to use it. It is a great tool though.

I'd group FreeBSD in with Linux. It might not be Linux, but it's close enough.

imagine: I'm glad I can help. I can't think of too many other programs that I would recommend at the moment. I would suggest using Gmail though. It works especially well if you work in/have any friends in a corporate environment. It's one of the few email/chat clients that corporate work environments don't block.

Linux is obviously the answer (but in upgrading to baselayout-2 and openrc, I borked my sound and I cba to fix, so I'm using windows right this second).

If you want a decent fast anti-virus program, which is consistently voted the best around, you should probably steal NOD32.

NOD32 or Avira, both have their quirks and false positives though.

Your right the reason is mostly bad browsing habits and people installing any old software.

Your advice will only help on a fresh PC tho.  An already clogged up PC will require a format and OS re-install to return it to its original speed.  Spyware removers etc can only do so much.

You forgot.....

NOSCRIPT - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. This + Firefox + Adblock = almost bulletproof websurfing (unless you are retarded)

CCLEANER (After you clean the viruses of course..) Run this shit regularly.

Delete unnecessary programs

DEFRAG! (I recommend - Diskeeper )

Although two of those have almost nothing to do with teh intraweb.. they help keep your PC running smooth

It's a pain in the ass. Just this computer alone has 3 HDD's with almost a Terrabyte of storage. I usually do what you say except with partitions on these drives rather than an external HDD. Both methods suck, but external could take up to a whole day or more to copy everything; this is because external drives generally spin up, read, and write slower, and Firewire/USB is nowhere near as fast as internal EIDE,SCSI, or SATA interfaces. Not to mention needing to sift through what is needed and what can be spared. If you copy programs you wind up wasting space half the time as they need to be installed from scratch again anyway due to the registry entries. I've yet to try Pidgin. I'm comfortable with my old version of AIM. Does Pidgin support direct connect and file transfer?

One that I like as a web-based solution to IMing is www.meebo.com

Shroomism, thanks for the added tips. I'm gonna check out all things mentioned. How does the defragger you mentioned do a better job than Winders defragger?

CCleaner is good, but I recommend Tracks Eraser Pro. That program is completely minimalist and deletes EVERYTHING!

Back in the day my stupid brother downloaded fat chick porn and busted my video card because he kept trying to hit the off switch. At the shop the guy saw it and thought it was MY fat chick porn and gave me the program.

Diskeeper not only does full system defrags when you want it to.. but it only silently runs in the background (VERY minimal resources - on my machine it uses about as much resources as trillian..) and defrags small time when you need it. So basically it's constantly doing small defrags so you when you do a full one the job is already half done. It also has a technology it calls I-FAAST, which puts the most used files on the fastest part of the disk. So basically, it's always running and optimizing your hard drives. I don't like paying for software, but this is the one piece of software I had no problems paying for... it's only $20, and it's worth it. Plus they let you try the full version for 30 days.

Noscript is the ONE plugin I wouldn't ever do without on Firefox. It's a pain in your ass for about a week.. but after that it's all gravy.
It basically blocks EVERY script/flash function on every site you visit that could even be a remotely malicious script. So every site you visit, pics and flash and shit wont load.. and you'll get a tiny little popup at the bottom saying "noscript blocked this and this and this site from loading on this page". You can go through them all and individually click to allow them permanently, or temporarily for that session. (allow shroomery.org, etc) The trusted sites you go to all the time, and you know they are trustworthy.. you just allow them permanently and after about a week of surfing you will rarely get that unless you visit a strange site, and even then its just a click away to allow it to load scripts. But if you ever DO click on a link with say... a malicious trojan, keylogger etc... noscript will just straight up block it from loading period. It goes faaar beyond the protection of Ad-block. I'll click on trojans for fun :P

Have you noticed any real speed improvements with Diskeeper? Faster start up and loading of frequently used programs(FireFox, Photoshop) would be nice.

Well... that's kind of hard to pinpoint. Cause I do a lot of tweaking and I keep my machine pretty clean so it always runs pretty smooth.
I did notice an overall improvement when I first got diskeeper, and I've had it for about 6 months now and haven't had to defrag once.. and I download/move/delete a LOT of files regularly. It does most of the work when your PC is idling. I go to defrag and it say it doesn't need it.
I don't know if it would help with load times of programs, but it definitely helps the overall health of the discs.
For faster load up times on programs, you can fuck with your registry.. and do some tweaks. Photoshop on my machine loads up in about 7 seconds, but that also has to do with ram and processor speed.. but you can definitely help it out with tweaks.
You use XP or Vista?

Also... disable unnecessary windows services.. thats a good one for freeing up system resources.

this is a bit trivial, but your peerguardian2 link sends you to the adblock add on for firefox. just thought you should know! not like its hard to find, but, yeah... not sure what my point is.

Ah, thanks, I'll fix that.

Shroomism: I'm gonna have to look into disabling unnecessary Windows services. Last time I tried to disable services Windows shit a brick. I'm using XP. Important specs for load times: P4 3.4Ghz with hyperthreading enabled, 2GB of RAM, don't remember which kind of RAM.

citric: Middleman > DeadAIM. It's more recent than DeadAIM and has some features that DeadAIM doesn't.

Hey Gumby, got a question for ya.

Me and my wife both have our own desktop on the computer.

If I run the Spybot or the Ad-Aware on my desktop, will it scan her desktop too or will they need to be run from her desktop as well?

You'd need to run it on separate machines unless you have the hard drives of both machines networked.

And I'd recomend running both Spybot and Ad-Aware; sometimes Spybot will catch something that Ad-Aware missed and vice versa.

Eh, to tell you the truth I'm not sure how Ad-Aware works as far as user privileges goes. If you guys can see each others' files it should be fine. If not, just chose the option for "allow all users on this computer to use this program" (or something to that effect) when you're installing it. Then you'd have to run it under each user name as far as I know. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. If you have an administrator account on that computer, just run the programs when logged in as admin.

I recently got an external hard drive which I store music and movies on.
Should I run disk cleanups and defrags on this external?
What benefits if any would that have?

Neg. Firefox > Chrome. Firefox has far more add-ons that can enhance your browsing and improve your security. It wins for that reason.

Yeah, chrome is like 5ms faster. I'm just fine waiting 5 whole mind numbingly boring milliseconds, thanks.

FireFox is great, but it takes so much space to run. if I click the FF icon, and wait... and wait.. i can then click google chrome and it'll open and load before FF even opens, let alone hang on a blank page for 10 seconds before loading Google.

Gumby - I do similar work, I work in the IT department for a company and also do computer repair and whatnot. You forgot to mention something I find to be very important and lately I have been seeing this WAAAY to often.

Your antivirus program is the ONLY THING that will tell you that you are infected. Your spyware/adware programs are the ONLY PROGRAMS that will tell you that you are infected with malware. Theres this new shit going around... Antivirus 2009, 2008 was bad too. If you get popups from anything else saying "oh hey! youre infected! click this button to clean up!" or some shit like that, dont do it! You have to be a fool if you do. And... if you are infected w/ that, Malwarebytes is a greate program to use to remove it. Just run it 2 or 3 times and it should be all clear.

But please, avoid clicking those stupid things. It's been getting more and more popular because they really do look legitimate. But again, only YOUR programs will be telling you these things. If you use AVG... only listen to AVG popups.

OK, just had to mention that. Gumby if you want to add that to the first post so people see it immediately thats cool (if you find this advice appropriate).

Gumby: I had an old friend who didn't want to throw away his old computer when he got his new one, so instead of trashing it, he slaved it to the new computer to help with processing. I think it took a while for him to do, and it seemed fairly hard. Anyways I was thinking about doing this at some point, would you know anything about this, or be able to point me in the right direction?

^^ it's actually very simple. It's just a jumper setting. On the back of a hard drive there are usually pins (# of pins varies based on kind of hard drive) and on 2 of the pins is a little plastic piece that can come out. Putting this little plastic piece on the correct pins will result in the changing of your hard drive from master to slave. On the front of the hard drive usually, it will tell you how you want the jumper positioned to assign it slave. Just change the jumper setting, and plug it in. Check the bios on bootup to ensure that the computer is seeing the hard drive as slave.

if you need better directions just ask. it's really not that hard he probably just didnt know what the fuck he was doing.

Platinum: I think he's talking about distributed processing via multiple processors. I knew some kids at Emory who got a grant from the school to do some distributed processing project. It was very complex and this was 4 years ago... I don't remember a single thing about it.

Also, I'll add that tip to the first post. Good idea.

I do no such thing. Google Chrome is running swimmingly and FireFox hangs if theres more than 3 pages open, and that only happened after making those changes. So now i'm just gonna have to back track and undo them.

[Edit] Surprise surprise. reset all those tweaks back to default, and now the browser is running well again.

Just bumping this thread to update with a problem fix that I found.

Lately while I've been typing the letters will just stop appearing on the screen then it will catch up really fast, so basically typing lag. All YouTube videos I watched would play fine for a couple of seconds then the video would freeze up for about 10-30 seconds while the audio kept playing.

I tried deleting my Firefox profile and creating a new one. Nothing. I uninstalled then reinstalled FireFox... Nothing. I was starting to get fucking pissed.

I was at wits end. I had Googled the living shit out of the problems and found nothing. Then I realized something. I hadn't cleared my cache in like 4 or 5 months and I had installed some new addons for FireFox. I uninstalled the FoxyTunes and Skype addons and cleared my cache.

Once I restarted FF I went straight to YouTube and loaded up a graphics intensive video and played it. It worked flawlessly. I had been having the same problem on my netbook so I booted it up and removed the Skype addon and cleared the cache. Problem solved on the netbook too.

Just wanted to share that info for you guys in case anyone is having the same problem.
I'm not sure if it was the Skype addon or my cache being too full, but alls I know is I can watch YouTube vids and type regularly in Firefox now.

Anything you can do about my video card crapping out on me?  I can watch flash videos and streaming videos fine (youtube, spankwire, etc), but if i play something that's on my harddrive after a little bit the video card heats up and BSoD. It doesn't even get that hot, usually it turns off around 51-52C which is nothing. This thing used to be able to reach 70 fine when I played vidja games on it.

Just sounds like it's crapping out. Try opening up yer puter and dusting off the heat sync of the card with some compressed air. Actually, fuck that, just dust out the whole machine. I do that to mine every 4 months or so. Make sure all your fans are working, including the one on the vid card if it has one (or 5, like some new vid cards do).

Just wondering about point 4. Does PeerGuardian really help or does it give a false sense of security? How hard is it for someone interested in catching filesharers to set up a honeypot box on a residential DSL line that won't be on the blacklist until long after the subpoenas are sent out?

Over here filesharing is still mostly legal so I don't really care who sees my IP when torrenting, or bother with PG.

I went to night school off and on for years for computer programming.  Of course, to all my not so computer literate friends/family this means I know how to repair their computers.  99% of the time it's bad browsing habits and I just end up formatting and reinstalling windows.  If it's a guy's computer I always be sure to mention pornhub.com and generally that saves me from having to do it again in a few months.

Thanks Gumby.  I downloaded Peer Guardian.  Now is that always running, or do I need to open it up every time I use P2P and/or torrents?  Thanks.

Nah, if it's running in the system tray then it's doing its job. It updates itself every time you start the program... which for me would be when I restart.

Dude FUCK Microsoft Security Essentials.

Avast! Free is the way to go.
That or AVG Free, or Avira Free
All very excellent FREE antivirus programs. Better than fucken Microsoft Security.
If you're going to PAY for an AV (or crack)... Kaspersky and NOD32 are the best paid ones IME.

ah, concerning the antivirus thing, my day job methinks might be similar to yours, and in my experience, i see no difference in virus infected computers that come into our shop running AVG free vs. the full goddamn $150 Norton SystemShits, or NOD32, or Kaspersky, or anything. I'm pretty sure to be a legit AV company these days, your virus database is your fucking backbone, followed closely by how well your scanning engine can remove malware, particularly ones that use devilish tricks to make itself damn near impossible to remove by hand.

i've found that a combination of AVG free and Malwarebytes (this ones a keeper, particularly. these guys rule) gets rid of ~90-100%  of viruses.

it's really important to remember that there's no antivirus program in the land that can stop you from self infecting your stuff. scan everything you download/plan to use from the internet before you run it, and try to keep your wits about you when dealing with unknown and/or potentially deviant activity (porn sites, cracked programs, etc.)

good thread

"How to not suck at the Internet" is to be dishonest, non-forthcoming, deceiving, and portray a false self.

If you do the opposite, you'll be hated.

I wouldn't recommend BitDefender. Nothing but problems for me and barely ever worked. Completely raped my computer's memory as well causing it to severly hang.
All other suggestions were great though. Glad to finally get rid of those annoying fucking ads that keep appearing on websites.

What SPECIFICALLY makes those better, and what SPECIFICALLY is the PROBLEM with MSE?

I use it, it works really well. And it was free. I was considering maybe adding something else........
And I DID use AVG for YEARS. But MSE works so well(for me) I didn't see a reason to change it.

Every time I have a problem it's cleared up within minutes.

 What are you man? 76 years old.
I had an old lady at work tell me how excited she was to be online....."But my computer is awfully slow, and I get these weird messages all the time"

So I asked her if she uses IE. Ya that's the one! She said. PROUDLY.

I ask her if before bed she's run downstairs and fling her front door open all night, or if she's post messages on lamp posts asking people to break in while she's at work.

Long story short she came back in a week later and thanked me a few times "now it works great, thank you so much!"
She even was able to install some anti-virus software.

If you can't match the "skills" of a 60 year old women, give your computer away to a poor youth.

Yep, I've found the same thing. And it has a very small system resource footprint, it's not some gigantic memory hog like a lot of antivirus programs are. Perfect for netbooks, IMO.

iuvfungi's guide to the internet

Install Ubuntu or Fedora.

Go to Google.com
type in "site:craigslist.org laminar flow hood"  without the quotes, duh or click here

or

"site:ebay.com fungi"

It searches the entire website nationally for craigslist.org and ebay.com in this case.

I agree with everything Gumby said in the first post. However I'd change a few things.

1) FUCK AIM COMPLETELY. Get an AIM Screen name from here.
https://reg.my.screenname.aol.com/_cqr/registration/initRegistration.psp?siteId=aimregistrationPROD&authLev=1&mcState=initialized&createSn=1&triedAimAuth=y&mcAuth=%2FBcAG0vXdbkAAPd7CjgqH0vXdfUIeaqqC%2BtwVRYAAA%3D%3D

Than download Pidgin from here, "http://www.pidgin.im/" It's probably the best all in one Instant Messaging Service out there. Also has more plug-ins and security supplies than any other out there.

2.) Fuck an Anti Virus, they're a virus themselves. Use common sense when on the internet and don't click anything you're wary of. Install Malwarebytes Anti Malaware. Get the keygen from btjunkie.org and set it on protection. Update almost every time you log on, they're always updating. THOUGH, if you choose to get an anti virus. Get 1 of these.
BitDefender, Kasperskies, or ESET nod32. ESET has a history of NEVER missing ONE Virus EVER. Though there removal sucks ass.

3.) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING THIS SYSTEM UTILITY PROGRAM. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD IT FROM THE SITE AS A TRIAL OR YOU CAN GET THE FULL VERSION FROM ANY TORRENT SITE. Advanced System Optimizer.

4.) Anything windows generally is to blame for all problems. Get Linux.

5.) CCLeaner also with Defragg are both really great programs to have, as well as the Advanced System Optimizer.

did you really just recommend people to not use an antivirus?  And then you called it a virus itself?

Personally i think your a virus trying to trick your reader's minds into lowering there defences to let you and your virus minion lords in.

Also trillian is another option for instant messaging, and you can access it from anywhere with an internet connection with no software needed to install.

hilarious thread, but you forgot to mention one of the primary rules of the internets: STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM ANYTHING MCAFEE. Also look into TrueCrypt to encrypt your HD's when you inevitably forget to run peerblock and get owned.

I agree, but I don't recommend that the average Joe try to clean out a laptop by taking it apart, laptops are like complicated puzzles. I've been repairing laptops for 13 years and the last time I took apart my Toshiba laptop to clean it I ended up with 5 extra screws once the thing was all put together.

Do not try and replace the parts. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.

That there are no parts.

Then you'll see, that it is not the parts that need replaced, it is only yourself.

of these issues if they used linux.

I tried doing the Linux thing on my netbook, installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix. It worked for a couple of months but I got sick of it.

citricacidx: I'll update the original post later today or tomorrow with some how not to suck at the internet tips.

Did the netbook have windows 7 starter pre-installed?

I like 7, but not as much as I like Ubuntu.

I find Ubuntu to be more stable and find that it manages
memory more efficiently than Windows.

I also like the fact that I can work with multiple workspaces (desktops). With two monitors you can
utilize 8 workspaces as opposed to the measly 2 you
get with windows.

But I really think Microsoft stepped up their game
with 7, without a doubt. I love that it fetches most of
the drivers automatically, and that startup, shutdown,
and reboot times have improved dramatically.

The linux CLI is the tits, also.
Bash scripting is the ballz, and I love that I can throw
a script in /usr/local/bin and essentially create a new
command that will do whatever I want. I wrote a simple
script that will backup all of my documents to a flash drive,
threw it into my crontab, and now my system will automatically
do a backup every night of the documents I work on daily.

DOS is pretty weak IMO. Have you ever tried to use the
taskill command (Kill command in bash)? What.a.headache

But, I'm afraid I'm going on a huge tangent here

How to not suck on the internet? Hmmm, well if you do,
and you get a nasty virus that you think warrants a format
and OS reinstall, try combofix first.

Boot into safe mode with networking (by pressing F8 at startup),
then download the program and follow the prompts...
Be sure to install the recovery console, as
I've seen scans blow systems away. The program will prompt
you to do that.

It works pretty well for 32 Bit XP and Vista systems.

Nice thread.

I've stopped using peer block a long time ago cuz I hear it does nothing("like a condome with a hole in it"^,).  I wonder how risky torrenting is?  I mean I'm pretty smart about it and read comments but I would prolly get life in prison for every thing Iv'e downloaded.

For virus scan I use torrented avast.  it auto updates virus definitions and should be activated for about 50 years.  This is a no bullshit virus scan, easy to use, has a built in bootscan, doesn't bother me ever. (I have sounds disabled).

For some reason when I install it on other computers though it gets a message saying its pirated or something.  I guess I'm wondering if there's any free virus scan that doesn't deactivate every month and ask you for your email and shit.  Thats the only reason I used a pirated version.

I also like AVG PC tune up.  It does almost anything you can think of to spead up your pc and more.  Like registry defraging, speed up menus and stuff.  But thats another thang I pirate.

Also, it seems no matter how clean you keep your computer it always starts to slow down.  I don't no how to fix that other than re formatting ur windows harddrive.  Its a good idea to keep all important files on a separate hard-drive or partition.  That way you can do a quick re install, and only need to install a few drivers maybe.  I haven't partitioned yet but honestly, I just want a small ssd mostly just for windows.

I'm still rocking Avast free version which I found through reading this thread a while ago.

Is it still decent protection as far as free software goes?

the free avast version only needs registered like once a year, also my computer was slowing down to a crawl i had a few hunches but no way to really trouble shoot my guesses.  Anyways im on windows 7 and well im used to xp and what i realized is i had been forgetting to clear my temp folder, and as it turned out i had 19gb's in temp:rofl:  clearing that out made a huge improvement.  My computer case always made a rattle noise and i thought it was just the plastic on it vibrating a bit and it stopped when i hit it.  Well turns out the noise was my NB fan on my pos evga motherboard, as i open my temp software and see its hovering at running at half the speed it should be and temps soaring, anyways case in point this was also screwing with my system i believe it was slowing me down a little bit, and i know for a fact it was causing me b'sod.

But i guess thats all pointless unless your one of the few with an x58 evga board, as it turns out this is a fairly common problem.  What made it even more confusing for me is the evga temp software the NB is actually listed to Vreg or linked to it or something because that fan directly changes the vreg temp which from my understanding shouldn't happen, all this time i thought 70C is great for vreg since its rated upto 110c or something crazy, well surprize vreg is actually my nb temp   that nb fan completely died on me now, luckly my HAf932 case is a helicopter when i plug all the fans in got my nb down to 45C with just case fans lol

I would like to add, though I maybe a lone voice in a stadium of people, that I use and like to use IE. Older versions, like 6,7 and 8 had some flaws, but Firefox and Chrome both have theirs as well. (google it if you don't believe it). I often find it funny that people have to download all their NoScripts and pop-up blocker addons and what not after they install their browsers. In IE 9, it is simple to turn off scripts and pop-ups. No Add-ons needed. The only one you may still need to download is one to block ads, but unless they take up the whole page, they normally do not bother me much.  I am not easily distracted by flashy lights and bright colors.

I have found IE9 to be a stable, useful, and fast browser that works flawlessly on every web page I have ever gone to. And once you get through installing all that other anti-virus/anti-malware stuff you mention in the other part of your guide, you should be pretty safe anyways.

Only downside is you have to at least have Vista on your PC to run IE9.  If you are still on WinXP (which there are still a lot of you out there), than it may be best to use Firefox of Chrome(stay the hell away from Safari).

Oh and if you are still running Vista, for the love of all things, upgrade to Win 7.  I put Vista on par with Windows Millennium.  That smelly piece of crap they pushed out their arse so they could have an OS named Millennium at the turn of the century.

TuneUp Utlilities should be added to that list!

It's a sweet AIO tool for making your computer faster and more secure. I too work at a computer repair shop and use it all the time. It's really convenient to use and it comes with 15 day trial period while it's fully operational. Check it out!
