Although I was already using old version AIM (I had a 5.1!) I didn't know about Middleman. Thanks!

this is a bit trivial, but your peerguardian2 link sends you to the adblock add on for firefox. just thought you should know! not like its hard to find, but, yeah... not sure what my point is.

Ah, thanks, I'll fix that.
Shroomism: I'm gonna have to look into disabling unnecessary Windows services. Last time I tried to disable services Windows shit a brick. I'm using XP. Important specs for load times: P4 3.4Ghz with hyperthreading enabled, 2GB of RAM, don't remember which kind of RAM.
citric: Middleman > DeadAIM. It's more recent than DeadAIM and has some features that DeadAIM doesn't.

Hey Gumby, got a question for ya.
Me and my wife both have our own desktop on the computer.
If I run the Spybot or the Ad-Aware on my desktop, will it scan her desktop too or will they need to be run from her desktop as well?

You'd need to run it on separate machines unless you have the hard drives of both machines networked.
And I'd recomend running both Spybot and Ad-Aware; sometimes Spybot will catch something that Ad-Aware missed and vice versa.

We are using the same computer, we just have our own User Accounts.
She logs off and I log in under my name and vice-versa

Eh, to tell you the truth I'm not sure how Ad-Aware works as far as user privileges goes. If you guys can see each others' files it should be fine. If not, just chose the option for "allow all users on this computer to use this program" (or something to that effect) when you're installing it. Then you'd have to run it under each user name as far as I know. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. If you have an administrator account on that computer, just run the programs when logged in as admin.

We are both logged in as admins and neither one of the Accounts has a password lock on it.

I recently got an external hard drive which I store music and movies on. Should I run disk cleanups and defrags on this external? What benefits if any would that have?

Yes. It helps to keep things in proper order, which will make for shorter load times.

Wow I just switched to FireFox and nothing is freezing up and crashing anymore. Is this what you guys were talking about all this time?

Pretty much.
This is why IE is shit.

Neg. Firefox > Chrome. Firefox has far more add-ons that can enhance your browsing and improve your security. It wins for that reason.
Yeah, chrome is like 5ms faster. I'm just fine waiting 5 whole mind numbingly boring milliseconds, thanks.

Optimize Firefox
That'll make it faster than Chrome.

FireFox is great, but it takes so much space to run. if I click the FF icon, and wait... and wait.. i can then click google chrome and it'll open and load before FF even opens, let alone hang on a blank page for 10 seconds before loading Google.
