Well... that story is kinda true. A spore isn't going to kill anyone provided its not an anthrax spore. The dosage that is leathal is about on full bites worth, around a table spoon of mushroom mater, not very much.. While the LD50 may be signifigantly lower on pets, I doubt that "walk[ing] over one then lick[ing] his paw" would be enough to kill a dog or cat.

Hmm, could be possible that some wind blown spores or licking some toxin off a paw could cause the indicated illnesses in animals, especially small ones. My cat will lick dry mushrooms if given the opportunity .. makes me wonder if a hungry animal would eat a mushroom if it liked the smell, or would lick a fresh mushroom.

a dog walking on toxic mushrooms then licking its paw(indirect lick) is analogous to a human dieing from one direct lick to a toxic mushroom. your tongue might burn, but you wont feel anything unless your alergic
