Just bought an X75 - Electric Sterilizer
    #9647794 - 01/20/09 08:59 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I decided to kill 2 birds with 1 stone and get the largest All American Pressure Cooker i could that is also Self Heating.

This unit should be able to hold 19 quart jars, and plugs into a 120v home outlet.

I just thought I would put this out here so I can hear everyone's thoughts and idea's.

Feel free to comment, and I will take a pic when I receive it

Does this should like something you would save up and buy?
Yes or No

I keep the dial at 6 and it takes 20 min to reach 15psi and does not go over 20. So i just add 20 min to my total time, for a completely silent very discreet pressure cooking operation.

This thing doesn't vent so you receive no smell outside while sterilizing! This is a very good buy even though my final comfortable answer is 12 widemouth quart jars.

Go get one! :wink::thumbup:

Would you buy it?

:wetself:  Those things are awesome, I wish I bought one of them instead of all this aeroponic stuff, like a nutramist and crap. I spent so much between shipping and junk I could have bought one of those. If anyone wants that nutramist I am selling it in the market place (shameless plug in lol). Hell those things kick ass I would probably read it bed time stories.

I'll be happy none the less with my presto. Only cost me 70$ for a 23 qt off amazon with free shipping. It'll be good enough.

I would buy it if it would cost nothing :hehehe:

Not that I don't think it's great, though. If you can afford it.

If I had the spare change just hanging out in my pocket screaming "Hey, spend me!", I'd do it.  But unfortunately, my change doesn't talk.

yea dude if I knew it cost you that much I may have voted "No" but it's a cool setup, definitely a time saver if your doing a hell of a lot of grain. If I was running a mushroom farm I'd be all over it though. Still I'm more likely to get a flowhood and perhaps bags for cheaper to make spawn.

What kind of surface do the self-heating vessels have to be placed on?  Are they cool at the base during operation (the feet/stand, that is)?

If you're in the US, the electrical code requires two dedicated small appliance circuits to feed the kitchen counters and go nowhere else in the house.  Be sure to locate and use one of those, so you don't trip a breaker during use.  For example, it it was on the same circuit as a space heater, vacuum cleaner, or even kitchen blender, it would trip the breaker.

That's an excellent choice if you're doing a lot of grain jars and/or spawn bags.

Thanks to all who have voted so far.

Thanks RR,
I have a dedicated outlet for this unit in my lab. I went over the whole power issue ahead of time.

I thought I would have to get a 220v version, but they make a 120v (which is cheaper)

I have a microwave above my stove. This gives me about 2 ft of space to put a large pot. My presto's are about as big as you can get under there.

Not to mention I only have the 2 small burners left on my stove, I have broken the others. This will also keep me from installing a stove in my lab. (I would have bought one and an AA PC)

Looks cool but I can't see myself spending that much money on a PC/Sterilizer.

My AA921 with standalone burners works GREAT and cost me $125.

I'd rather take the money I saved and build/buy a really nice flowhood.

I've found some really nice lab quality flowhoods on ebay but the shipping is ridiculous on a piece of equipment that large.

I managed to pick up a 3x6 ft  (yes, feet) flowhood for $500 no shipping (found it locally) about a year to year-and-a-half ago.  Greatest investment I've made in this hobby so far.

I'll be after a larger PC next time I've got the money set aside for this hobby.  (That will probably be a while though.)

3'x6'? man that's a good flowhood especially for that price. Must've been like moving a couch.

i voted NO.  the way i look at it, its just more shit that can/will go wrong, and extra parts that need replacing.  i cant help to put everything i own to the test of its usefulness in a post-apocalypse scenario.  as it stands with my AA941, when the chinese blow up the world, ill still be able to use it over a fire, and grow mushrooms using horse shit, straw, potatoes(agar/LC) etc.  NO power needed anywhere.  just fire and shit.  i love it.

less is more.
the machines will rise.

With the metal frame (fully assembled, because it's not easy at all to take apart) it weighs in at ~400lbs!  I only made the move once.  Three men and a furniture dolly/cart.

I can't believe the number people who don't care to own one.  Outside of the price, why not?  Omni, you realize you could simply adapt the same piece of equipment to be used over a fire also, yes?

I do like the simplicity of methods that don't require technologically advanced machinery or equipment, but we do have those capabilities. Why not use them to our advantage?  We can always go back to those others methods, provided we have at least learned about them, if the need should arise.  In the meantime, I'm lazy.

I would deffinetly buy that if I had the money, I have the same counter situation as you oatman, with the microwave over the stove, its deffinetly a pain in the ass.  Espessially because the mrs had a small stovetop fire once, which melted our old microwave so we had to get a new one, and the house smelled like burning plastic for a week.

I was looking at getting an AA921 and a stand-alone burner.

But this AA25X for $500/w ship, while being a little bit more expensive should be better in the end.  I didn't really like the idea of using some ghetto stand alone burner setup anyway.

It's about 50/50 in everyone's minds.

I like the idea of having it's own burner attached. Not to mention it's going to cut my pc time from 3 hrs down to 1.

if your serious about the hobby go for it. Having just done some grains for G2G I can think of how much I would like to have a similar unit. I had to do 3 goes in my 22qt pc to cook 26 1L jars. I bet if your really into this hobby that those would be a good investment.

I'm curious, what is the power usage of one of those units?

I wonder what the operating cost of it is in electricity...

I use an old presto that can hold 9 quart jars... which is decently bigger than what most people have and I would LOVE to have a 941.  Next to my air return mixing box, its second on my list.

13.25 Amps is the max load i think...so around 1600 Watts... just gotta make sure you are using an outlet that is one a low use circuit...since most house circuit breakers are 15-20 amps...with the exception of the appliance circuits and the HVAC circuits

If it draws 13.25 amps, you can't legally run it on a 15 amp circuit.  Any appliance that runs for more than an hour is considered a continuous load, and the circuit must be de-rated to 80%, according to the National Electrical Code, which sets minimum standards to avoid fire.  Thus, you could only 'safely' operate it on a 20 amp circuit.

lol, yeah those r nice.. If you notice the regular 941 PCs only work with a actual burner. No glass tops or ceramic because they are soo large.
I wanted to buy a 941... but like everyone else ill make due with my presto til I hit the lottery or get my income tax back. Ill have to buy one like that also.. I have a glass top stove. =(.

Thats a nice big pot for pastuerizing bulk sub too.

Use 12/2 with ground.  It's VERY important that the body of the PC itself is grounded.

I would buy one, but will mention something.

I got one Presto 21L and it made me nuts all time. Then I ordered from a shop a 2nd hand AA Sterilizer 941, but at the end I got a 921 !!

I had a lot of problem with that.

Why?

I grow Pleurotus and Shitake for my family and 21 L is too little for me... 41 L and 75 can be great for the amount I grow. No less, no more.

The 21L makes me work sooo much and wait soooo much, it really consumes my time and the fun of doing it.

But... When I need to sterilize scapels, siringes and do on the 21 L it becomes huge and practically useless, so I hate it anyways. Seldom I have other things to do when I will try a little agar or a couple of siringes.

Therefore I had to buy again a 4 L Presto and use it for small sterilizations.

So I think the size of the PC should be according to our needs, and there is no "ideal size" as far as needs may be different. Need should determine size of the tool. Just imagine sterilizing two siringes or two pounds of rice in a 75L !!!

Also time have to be taken in account.

And I had a hard time not having a small PC for small sterilizations, so I think its useful to have a small PC anyways.

Thats my opinion.

im actually planning on ordering one of those in the next day or two. I figured that since i have 84 1/2 pint, 36 quart, and 6 half gallon jars...that it would be wise to have one of these bad boys...especially since i dont have a stove that can fit a 941

Haha... OK I made a mistake about the X75 that is just 41L, but of course there are 75L, look this or google a little:

http://www.made-in-china.com/showroom/sunhang/product-detailwezEJySUJtRp/China-Electric-Vertical-Steam-Sterilizer-JY1002-.html

http://reoterm.com.br/central/Autoclaves_Bloco_Agitadores/Steam_Sterilizer/Varioklav_75s_and_135s.pdf

There are many types, actually a fiend of mine had a bigger one, I do not recall capacity but was big, he used for a huge factory of agaricus bisporus...

I tried it out last night for the first time. I didn't watch it while it was getting up to pressure. When I came back to it, there was steam leaking from the side.

This is my first time using an AA PC. Does anyone have any tips and tricks?

Well,

I may be answering NO to my own question.

I was told that this thing can hold roughly 19 Quart jars.
Realistically I can fit 14 with a good seal.

I haven't tried to pc more than that but it doesn't look like the lid wants to close all the way.

This is my first time with an AA, and would appreciate feedback on any field notes from users. Here's a few pics of how i have tried to arrange the jars.

Anyone who can get more in here without breaking the unit, I'll give a prize!!!

you can't fit 2 jars standing on each other.  :wtf:

How many can you fit on the bottom layer?  (All the ones you have standing up.)  It's a little hard to see..  And jeeze, if that is the case I'd never get it.  Doesn't the AA941 have the same inside space dimensions??  =o =o =o ??

it's likely that whoever you heard could fit 19 in had different jar types. I have some jars that I can fit 9 in and some I can fit 10 in my PC. You may have to find different jars, or just deal with it, or do bags like the above poster said.

In the second pic it looks like you can fit one more on the bottom rack, and have you tried making hte jars circle the outside on the top rack? it looks like you might be able to fit one more in the center then.

It's funny and great how you can attract people to a post by offering a prize...

I can not fit one more in any pic. I have tried to alternate the jars upside down and everything. I'm actually quite disappointed!!

I was able to do 14 with my 2 cheepo mirro PC's.

haha like I said you need either shorter/wider or taller/narrower jars to make it work. One way to make it work easy would be to ask whoever it was who told you it would fit 19 what brand or dimensions of jars they were using.

Shoot them an email, I know in the US we mainly have kerr and ball jars with slightly different dimensions. I'm sure there are other manufacturers that offer different ones as well. I've seen round and square jars for sale, which may also be beneficial.

Go for it I'm not going to email them for you. Unless the prize is a P. ostreatus print.

Man you spent your money on that, email them for sure.  If your spending that much on that they shouldnt lie to you. It may not seem like your gaining ground by having that, but on the bright side you could possably fill your 2 smaller pcs, and pc all 3. do like 28 jars.  Even if you don't want to do that, im sure being able to pc anytime almost any place will come in handy a lot.

Somthing to consider is looking for differant shaped jars.  I personally have 2 or 3 differant style jars, im sure you have more than me though.  Not lookin for a prize or anything by the way.  But good luck, and about the leak, all i can offer is if those have the rubbber seal around the inside of the lid, take it out and soak in warm awater for like 10 mins than put it back in.  Thats what I did with mine when it sprung some side leaks and it did the trick.

.... who uses a stove anymore for cooking food?

One of the pristine factors to an AA PC is the metal on metal seal. I honestly just didn't think I had it on tight enough. Don't wanna go overnighting it on my first go around

It is quite upsetting to find out it didn't hold as much as I thought, but the convince factor of not doing it in the kitchen when company comes over. That was the Primary objective

But 14!!!  :argh:

Let this be a lesson to all

Hell, I still use my Mirro. It only does 6 jars at a time. Years ago, I had a 22, but it was stolen. Check this out, someone breaks into my house, totally misses my valuables and growroom, yet steals a fucking PC?
Anyways, I hope you find it worth it. Seems it achieved your objective...

It does, and more importantly it'll also hopefully lead to me putting this thing on a timer.

Or even more be able to hook it to a secure web cam and a internet controlled ioBridge. Be able to PC shit straight from the iPhone

lqtm something tells me the timer may be better and cheaper. Though If you wanted to automate your greenhouse through your Iphone that may be a good idea.

Neither of the 2 PC's I ever owned had one. Instead of towels or rags, I line the bottom with jar rings. I doubt that would be effective at this size...

I have a 22 qt and it fits 7 1Ls then 3 on top if they are the right shape, otherwise just 2.

The 75X has 25% less capacity than a 941. And at only 250% the cost!

meh...whatever...im in an apartment and i really dont have the overhead (literally) for a 941 and i sure dont wanna have to replace a broken stove element...plus with an internal heating element I'd imagine you can cut down on energy usage since less heat is lost to the air...

plus I already bought one...so good luck convincing me it was a bad idea

Last comment.

Go get one! :wink::thumbup:
