Planning-Obsessed First Time Grower, seeks a little guidance
    #9644684 -

Hello all!
I am brand new in the community and have a few questions. I have, of course, watched the available tek videos out there, obsessively I might add. I have some starter materials gathered up already and getting the the work area ready. Me and my wife are compulsive planners w/prep work being 80% of the battle so mycology seems right up our alley. So far the only hardware we are missing is:
  • glove boxes (which ill buy and prep while waiting for the spores)
  • Spores (i'm going for the
  • Pressure Cooker

We're going to go for B+ strain because I read its reliable and relatively easy to grow. The real question is regarding the tek to use. As I mentioned earlier I have read/watched teks for a while now and the ones that appeal to me are the classic PF Tek (yes, b/c I am a newbie and its the most detailed I have found) but with rye seed substrate. I will combine different elements I found to be very useful but need a little assistance with:
  • multi-syringe tek which is 1 syringe per jar. you sterilize each needle and Its only used for once, this may be a bit overboard but I'm all about efficiency. I am starting with 6 jars because of space restrictions. Overkill?
  • Rye seeds or cracked corn or birdseed substrate for continual inoculation (working with 12 jars inoculating 6 at a time). I want to use one of these subs because I only want to buy spores once. Need to know:which is easier to use for beginner? And can I freeze a fully colonized jar for later use or do I need do spore prints? I will print anyways for obvious reason but will like to know if saving a colonized jar can speed up start of new crop and and how long can jar be saved for.
  • Tub-in-tub w/heater incubation chamber
  • Fish-tank birthing chamber with: fish-tank motor for continual water movement for constant humidity; modified hood for tubes access and tyvek'd air flow by covering up hood holes w/tyvek and having a fan on near tank. Tank is 20 gal ie space restriction mentioned earlier. I can only fit 6 pans/cakes.

I am really exited to get started. I figured 6 jars-1 contaminated=5 jars. 7 to 10 big mushies @2 to 3 flushed minimum should give me about 105 biggies and some misc aborts etc. To be a bit more if no contamination occurs, fingers crossed. Are my calculations to high/low/way off?

As you can see I want to go for fully-auto or semi-automated processes. So, community what's the verdict for my ambitious start?

Thanks in advance,
_Duende

One syringe provides enough spores to inoculate six jars. Buy one syringe from a recommended vendor and that will get you going. Don't use one syringe per jar because you could flood the substrate with too much water. I think rye berries are superior to bird seed but thats a personal opinion. as far as your fruiting chamber is concerned, the fish tank idea is outdated. I use a martha chamber for bulk growing, but when I experiment with new things I sometimes use a shotgun style terrarium but with fewer holes than usual (I don't mind fanning and misting). They are cheap and you can stack them. Search for these teks on this site. Watch Roger Rabbit's new videos.

I'm on my google android but above poster is right (iwill asnwer on more detaillater)

1 10cc syringe can inoc several jars. I can do 10 jars using 1cc per jar. Using 1 syringe while it seems there's less chance of contamination its actually counter productive. Flame the needle before each jar/ that is what will prevent cross contamination

I wil be back.

from my research...

- The incubator isn't really necessary, jars colonize at room temperature fairly well. I understand you want the best possible outcome, so you want everything in the absolute ideal environment, but the tub in tub maybe money that isn't necessary to spend.

- I'm confused. Your doing the PF tek, or a casing? I think verm + BRF peforms better as a cake than rye. From what I have read Rye shines when spawning to something else. Please anyone correct me!

- I'm not familiar with type of fruiting chamber your making, but be careful of having fans too close. A fan moving air within the room is good to help FAE if you're not fanning, but not directly at or too close to the fc. I set up a fan to dry my shroomies about 6 or so feet away from my shotgun fc pointing up and it dropped my humidity by up to 15%!

Hope I've been a little help. Good luck!

Let your jars/bags/whatever colonize at normal room temperature.  They  also don't have to be in the dark.  I stay away from going over 80 degrees.  Using an incubator is kind of pointless unless you seriously can't afford to keep one room temperature controlled.  And if you have that issue, then keeping your FC temperature controlled WILL be an issue.  Find a way to keep your grow/spawn area temperature controlled with a small space heater.

wow, first, read more carefully when your learning.

its multispore not multisyringe.  use only 1cc/ml per jar=1 syringe can knock up 10 jars.

Pf tek is brf not grain

you have to know how to make spore prints and MS syringes to be self-sufficient.

dont freeze n e thing, if u must put in ziplock and store in fridge

just get another tub and do the shotgun tek for FC.

Dude if you only have one syringe on the way, you should look up a LC tek. With one syringe, you could make enough innoculant to do 50 plus jars if you are sterile enough and prep your jars the right way. You can also microwave it to sterilize since you don't have a pc. All of the materials are readily available at the grocery sto.

Forget making a LC, a multispore syringe can provide a mind boggling amount of spawn.  One syringe is plenty for 6 jars, trust me.  Save a little bit so that if you mess up your first time you can give it another shot.

On your first go try the PF TEK, or if you want to challenge yourself go with a bulk TEK involving grain spawn.  It will take longer to see fruit with the later but you will get the advantage of being able to do grain to grain.

Yes you can save jars by putting them in cold temperatures, I wouldn't freeze them though.

I would say your putting too much effort into your fruiting chamber.  If you go bulk you will most likely do a monotub which makes it really easy.  If you decide PF TEK go with a shotgun FC, plenty of information on it here.  Whats tasty about the monotub or shotgun FC is that they really can take care of themselves for the most part.  You just need to fan them or give them a spray with some water every now and then.

It seems like you got your shit together for the most part but you seem to be a little to gung ho for your own good.  One syringe is fine, making an automated fruiting chamber sounds cool but really isn't needed unless your going to build a martha or something big.

Keep us updated I think your going to do alright.

Thanks for all the awesome feedback!
Just to clear the air:
I want to do grain so that I can keep a constant flow of mycelium growing via grain to grain. Rye seems to be the better option.

The 1 syringe per jar tek: what I meant was each syring will only have enough for for 1 jar. However ifrom what I gather that's just overkill

Temp-controlled incubation:yes temp is a concern which is why I will need some sort of chamber/space that is easy to control temp at leats for the winter.

Fishtank Terrarium: this is readily available without additional costs which is why I wanted to use it.

Thank you all again for the info,
I will post more regarding my progress.
In the meantime, have a nice trip,
_Duende

You cannot do grain to grain forever as once the mycelium is about 3 month old it starts dying off.

Just do a simple PF grow and get used to the basic techniques involved in this hobby. From the fruits fof those cakes you can make dozens of spore prints which mean hundreds of spore syringes.

By doing a simple grow you reduce the chances of things going wrong until you have all those spores to back you up in case things go wrong in the future.

And for half pint cakes 1ml per jar is more than enough.

I get 12 jars out of a 10 ml syringe by being a bit stingy with the solution.

PS: Give the first link in my sig a read.

rye is not usually the better option unless you're in the country and near a feed store with it on tap. otherwise birdseed is way cheaper and easier to get. just do pf tek your first time, you seem a little confused. a rubbermaid tub is like 5 bucks you can splurge a little on a sbotgun, its well worth it in the long run.

WBS is your best option.  It is great spawn, very cheap, and colonizes quickly. DONT USE CRACKED CORN if you have the option to use WBS.

Also, don't try to make up your own tek.  Just find a good tek and follow it word for word.
