What kind of gun should I get?

I have a rifle. I want a pistol. I don't want to shoot people. I just wanna have a big dick to wave in peoples faces if they try to rip me off. I also wanna shoot some shit up at the range.
I'm thinking like a desert eagle, or maybe a 357/38 special. Something scary as fuck.

Just go to the range, and rent. When you find the piece that fits your hand, pick a caliber that fills your needs.

If you want something for concealed carry, anything bigger than a 45 isn't going to do it. A .357 revolver isn't a bad choice. They're small, easy to take care of, and can load .38 Specials as well. I even watched my friend put a .410 slug through one once, though i'm not sure if that's a particularly great idea or not. My carry gun is a .40 S&W Walther PPS. Incredibly light, very small, and most importantly, very thin. I can slip it into my pocket and it looks like the imprint from a cell phone or something, not like a gun. Quite a bit more expensive than a .357 revolver of comparable quality, though, so if you're on a budget, I wouldn't recommend that.
That being said, you shouldn't have a gun as a "big dick to wave in someone's face". The only time a gun should ever be in your hand is if you fully intend to use it. What are you going to do if the guy calls your bluff? Just shoot him anyway? If he's unarmed, that's murder, or at the very least, manslaughter. You shouldn't pull a gun on someone unless they're a clear and present danger to your life or a loved one's life. At which point, there should be no dick-waving, no warning shots, just aim and shoot.

yeah id do what one user suggested and go to the range and rent until you find one that really fits you well.
you gotta have experience with it before you know how well it is going to work with you...hell i know that and i don't even own one yet.
good luck, i would say get a desert eagle if you want looks because i love those for looks too. for a real nice weapon tho i would rent at a nice range and shoot it up..find a nice practical pistol that you can react with quickly and with accuracy.

To be honest I plan on getting a gun that looks badass for two reasons. 1) I'm young and impressionable, who doesn't want a cool fucking gun? 2) I'd rather wave it around and say "Back the fuck off" than have to actually use it. If someone calls my bluff and physically attacks me? I shoot them. If someone calls my bluff verbally without doing anything? I continue to keep it out until they leave.
I don't see myself ever having to use it, or even pull it out, for safety though, so show-off factor is always nice too.
Crucify me if you (not you specifically Roach) don't think that's what guns are meant for.

Best thing you could do then, is to go down to your local range, and test out everything they have. Those guys in my experience will usually be completely honest with you. I wouldn't buy one there, but its a great way to get a quick introduction.

I love shooting this gun at the range! It might take a 3 shot chest grouping to kill a big person but still it's a bad ass gun.

Ruger Security Six, 4" barrel, .357 magnum capable of firing .38 spc.
This is the revolver I own (that one in the pic isn't mine). And I absolutely adore it. Adjustable sights = extremely accurate.
Picked it up at a gun show for 350. .38 special costs about 15 for a box, .357 mag costs about 20, and the difference is amazing.
And its just so sexy - yea you can kill someone just as easy with a fucking tek 9 (well, maybe from point blank), but judges are far more lenient on you if you have style.
Also- to whoever said they had a friend put a .410 through it - I think you might be mistaken. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.410
According to wiki a .410 has a similar diameter as a .45 colt. Which is significantly wider than a .357/.38 - a .410 wouldn't fit in a .38, and if it did I still would recommend rather strongly against firing it.

Beretta 1911 chambered in 45 ACP caliber is a good "carry" gun, enough take down power to drop a person with one shot and plenty of more rounds to back it up. For the most powerful, check out the Smith & Wesson model 500 chambered in 50 caliber magnum. Even if you don't hit your target with it, the sound alone will scar the shit out of anybody downrange.

Look at you, Mr. Righteous hippie, showing off fake guns! Awesome!
Edit: Although I've never owned a handgun, if you're really going for the intimidation factor and want to do concealed carry, a .45 1911 would be the best, depending on what sized dude you are. Otherwise I'd say get something in .38. I want to get my mom a Walther PPK, it's compact and shoots a decent round.

I volunteered to get shot by one of the guns in the PP series. I don't remember which model it was though.
I was left with a bruise similar to the one a paintball leaves when you get hit on bare skin or with a tshirt. I layered up with my winter coat and some hoodies and shirts and was fired upon. Probably wasn't the smartest thing Ive ever pulled off but it was still pretty intense. I don't really see it as a firearm, more like a high powered bb/pellet gun.

Apparently, you know not of which you speak. The "Beretta" is a 9mm, which was the replacement FOR the 1911. Also, there is no such thing as a guaranteed man killing 1 shot caliber. I just read a case the other day where a restaurant owner shot a badguy 18 times before the guy fell. He was using a .44sp. Anyone interested in firearm self defense should spend time reading and or watching actual cases. Also read anything by Cooper or Ayoob amongst many others.

Good model choice. Did you try it in 40 or 45? I find the .45 more controllable in that platform. Also, there is the new XDm. You should really give those a try.

I have a Saiga 12 gauge on backorder. Its not fully auto, but it does use magazines, which Im going to replace with a 30 round drum. It also looks like a fat AK because its based on the AK action, as well as being made in the same factory.

I haven't tried it in those calibers, I prefer the 9mm right now just because of the cost of ammo. I'm curious though as to why you say you find the .45 more controllable, why?

Alot of people have a misconception about the .45. Yes it is a bigger caliber. No its not less controllable than a 9. To put it in the best way I can, the perceived recoil between the two goes as follows... With the 9mm cartridge, you get more "straight back" recoil. With the .45ACP, its more of an upward motion.

Im only being nit picky because Im a 1911 enthusiast, lol. That sir, is not a clone. It has a 2011 frame (which is poly). I have been thinking about those frames, but the only thing I dont like is that to my knowledge (never seen one in person) you cant replace the grips with mil spec panels.

Except it's limited ammunition. Good for not leaving shells behind though. Something tiny in a revolver. Good for back up or emergency. A boot pistol if you will like a Ruger .357 Magnum
And a Glock 22 .40 S&W is my first choice. Light, concealable (Despite it's size) and low recoil for good field accuracy.
This guy agrees with me. Even if we have faith in different gods we certainly have the same faith what really matters.
http://www.christiangunowner.com/best-concealed-carry-handguns.html
And when it comes down to it. Size does not matter. Knowing how to use it does. And I press you to find a bitch that disagrees.

That's it, I'm going for my gun license! Ive been wanting one for so long and I'm gonna go for it.
All this gun talk and pics are making me wanna shoot things and become a marksman .
Hopefully it's not to difficult to get.
Start off with a P22 right away, then get a nice AR15. Anyone know if the license covers assault rifles as well as hand guns? I hate shotguns so I don't care about that.
My sister wants to get her license as well so I got someone to go with any time.

I'm not sure how Canada's laws work, but if I remember correctly, both the P22 and AR-15 as they come standard won't be legal, the P22 for having too short of a barrel (although the California legal model should do the trick) and the AR-15 for being capable of firing more than 5 shots before reloading. You can get new mags for the AR-15 of course, but non-standard magazines are usually total junk, want to jam every time, have crappy springs, etc. etc. Not sure that many AR-15 makers make 5 round mags standard, doesn't seem like there would be much demand.
Someone correct me if I am wrong here.

I was under the impression that handguns were pretty much outright illegal in Canada. Only legal if you have a permit, and you can only get the permit if you're law enforcement or can prove that your ex-wife is trying to kill you or something like that.
Could be wrong - I dont live there.

The sig P225, and p226 are great range pistols, I would also check out a walther PPKS and Glock 27 (40 calibur mini glock)_ My dad used to own a gunshop before he got a DUI and the PPKs was my favorite...followed by the sig P225 If you want a 22 cal pistol a P-38 is a great range gun too...I would follow the abopve advice and rent a few first to try them you want one that fits you right. If you got the money HK makes some nice pistols, there is one that looks just like a PPK but costs 2x as much and is a great pistol

For SD, you certainly don't need a DE or 357. Both of those are much too powerful and would cause way too much over penetration, not to mention uncontrollable recoil. If you are new to hand guns, I would go with either a 9mm Springfield XD (or Glock, or S&W M&P) or a S&W 38 revolver.

I agree with a shotgun.
That Mossberg 590 tactical is very nice. If you want the same quality but at a cheaper price then get a Mossberg 500A Persuader. Buy a metal safety button, and perhaps a trigger and guard. You're good to go.
Shotguns are the Swiss Army Knives of firearms. They can do almost anything.
