FC question
    #9642434 - 01/19/09 10:53 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

Im new to this site and have been going through post after post and have seen lots of different types of fruiting chambers and thought itd be a good idea to ask before I  started to grow. I plan to make my FC based on the PF tek but was wondering if it is necessary to drill holes in all sides of my FC? I planned on mimicking the exact FC in the PF tek, what suggestions do you have for the most efficient FC using the materials in the PF tek

shotgun FC 1/4 inch holes on all six sides and lid just like in the video is the best way to go.  I have a greenhouse with all the automated gadgets and still make up 12 cakes every couple months to keep my pftek shotgun FC full.  It works well especially after you dial it in a bit getting the RH and FAE balanced.  The fine tuning is done by adjusting the amount of soaked/drained perlite in the bottom and misting/fanning schedules.

Yep,

Build the shotgun FC as you have seen and as Verm420 described.

I like tall FCs ...... I use the Sterite Ultra 92 Qt. clear bin that is available at Walmart.  The extra height is good in case you need an extra thick layer of damp perlite (say your ambient humidity is low and you need extra help). Height is also good if you start doing trays of substrate.

Remember to have the bin raised off the shelf.  Air needs to circulate under the bin .... and up through the holes in the bottom.

Good luck.

You can use many things .... people use the jar lid rings (4 of them) .... you're just trying to raise the bin off the shelf without restricting the 'wicking' airflow.

I use two little 3/4" x 3/4" x 12" wood strips.

I also try to keep the 'wicking' airflow coming off the perlite inside the FC unrestricted.

Cakes or trays sitting directly on the surface of the perlite inhibit its effectiveness.

1/2" pvc is what I use for this purpose.

If you are doing cakes .....

you can use a piece of plastic light grid to hold the cakes off the perlite.

You will be happy with a tall FC if you do this kind of stuff.

Good luck.  Have fun.

Your advice is extremely helpful and appreciated, where would I go about getting a plastic grid like you showed in your picture?

Lowes or Home Depot have them.

They are drop in plastic grids for florescent light fixtures. Come in white or chrome.

You'll have to carefully cut it to size.  I used a band saw because one was available .... a fine tooth hand saw (hack saw) would work.
