The print looks good for a gym species, take a nibble but dont swallow it...see if they taste bitter.

They kinda look like Gymnopilus luteofolius, clean the caps off then post sum more pics of them, get some macro shots of everything check this out...

Yeah the caps seem too smooth for luteofolius.
Luteofolius will have scale like fibers on the cap.
They will usually have green spots at the edges of the "scales" as well.

Are you comparing with the pics I took at the fungus fair 2 weeks ago?

That is probably what will come up if you google the species.

I have them dried on the dehydrator and I might do some work on them to find out what they really are.

I couldnt tell that the caps were smooth from the first set of pics, they were covered in sand.

But yes i agree with you.

Someone needs to.  Many Gyms specimens go unidentified, or worse MISidentified, because so few are able to do the work.  If you get results be sure to let us know.  It is my contention that many so-called, rarely-found species are merely the result of shoddy scholarship (and the inability to procure specimens).

Some crystals that were on the microscope slide that had the spore print:

Spores 2000x, 10.8 micron divisions, non-dextrinoid (approx 7.5 - 9 x 4 - 5)

Cheilocystidia 400x

Pileipellis

Pileipellis, with an inflated hyphae

I think this is a Gymnopilus but its much different microscopically from any of the others I have looked at.  The cystidia are much differently shaped and I have not seen encrusted cystidia in Gymnopilus before.

The cap turns black with KOH, another sign of Gymnopilus.

You are supposed to be able to tell Gymnopilus from Galerina with that test, but I tried it on Galerina and that darkened quite a bit as well.

I guess the spore shape and the texture of the cap surface is enough to tell it from Galerina.

I'd still be hesitant to eat it though, Galerina also has roughened spores and many of the same microscopic features.

Non-dextrinoid spores narrows it down a bit.  Any idea which one it might be?

Excellent micrographs by the way.

Damn, nice photos Alan! I really like the second one of Cheilocystidia, it looks like it's trying to come out of the screen, especially around the top of the photo. At what power was your microscope when you took that one?

No.

The scope was at 400x and the camera zoomed all the way in.

Cool. The zoomed in part is probably why it looks like it's trying to jump out of the screen. Or it might just be that I'm tired as hell and have a nice little buzz going.

You didn't mention pleurocystidia so I assume there were none.  If so, the mushroom is Gymnopilus pholiotoides found on a palm tree trunk in Cuba.  Check it out and tell me what you think.  Hesler's monograph, pg. 31.

All other Gymnopilus with those size spores are ruled out, mostly by pleurocystidia.
